Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard weighs in on Karla Sofía Gascón controversy

Jacques Audiard, the writer and director of Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, is the latest creative to weigh in on the controversy surrounding the film’s star, Karla Sofía Gascón.
In an interview with Deadline, Audiard addressed the discovery of Gascón’s old tweets promoting hate speech, which ranged from defending Hitler to insulting Muslims. What disappoints Audiard even more is Gascón’s half-sympathetic approach in the aftermath of the tweets resurfacing. For now, Audiard has no plans to communicate with Gascón.
“I haven’t spoken to her, and I don’t want to. She is in a self-destructive approach that I can’t interfere in, and I really don’t understand why she’s continuing,” Audiard expressed. “Why is she harming herself? Why? I don’t understand it, and what I don’t understand about this too is why she’s harming people who were very close to her. I’m thinking in this thing of how hurting others, of how she’s hurting the crew and all these people who worked so incredibly hard on this film. I’m thinking of myself, I’m thinking of Zoe [Saldaña] and Selena [Gomez]. I just don’t understand why she’s continuing to harm us.”.

Gascón set up an interview with CNN without Netflix’s knowledge. Gascón defended herself against accusations of racism and antisemitism. However, Gascón implied that these allegations were publicized to destroy her chances of winning awards.
In the wake of the controversy, Netflix has removed Gascón from Emilia Pérez’ Oscar campaign. Furthermore, Netflix will not facilitate Gascón’s attendance at the major awards displays left this season. Netflix typically pays for the transportation and lodging for its contenders. Now, there is “no great interest” for Netflix to provide the same courtesy for Gascón.
Before Gascón’s scandal, Emilia Pérez was riding high after the film received 13 Oscar nominations, the most in this year’s field. Gascón became the first openly transgender performer to receive a nomination for an acting Oscar. Now, Gascón’s chances of winning Best Actress are virtually zero.
The final round of Oscar voting begins Tuesday, February 11. Only time will tell if Gascón’s wrongdoing hurts Emilia Pérez’ Oscar haul at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2.

It’s easier than ever to use ChatGPT Search — sign-in no longer needed

Table of Contents Table of Contents What’s the difference between ChatGPT and ChatGPT Search? How can I use ChatGPT Search?
You no longer need to sign in to use ChatGPT Search.
The move makes it easier than ever to use ChatGPT Search, and increases the pressure on Google, which has dominated online search for decades. Other search-focused AI chatbots like Perplexity may also feel the impact of ChatGPT Search becoming more accessible.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Search in October 2024, about two years after it released its regular AI-powered chatbot, which quickly garnered worldwide attention for the way it responded to online queries in a conversational way, saving customers from having to trawl through endless search results to find what they’re looking for.
What’s the difference between ChatGPT and ChatGPT Search?
The regular ChatGPT chatbot is trained on a huge dataset up to a specific cutoff date and doesn’t access real-time information, whereas ChatGPT Search accesses dynamic, real-time information.
The AI chatbot is considered ideal for tasks like creative writing, brainstorming, and general knowledge inquiries that don’t require access to recent data, whereas ChatGPT Search is useful for obtaining the latest news, weather updates, stock prices, and other time-sensitive information.
OpenAI is having a busy start to the year, not long ago launching an AI agent called Operator, which autonomously performs web-based tasks, and also Deep Research, an AI system that autonomously conducts multi-step research tasks, with both functions designed to enhance user productivity.

Plan special events easily with the new Apple Invites app

Apple has officially launched a new app for iPhone called Apple Invites. This app, anticipated since at least the beginning of the year, allows customers to create custom invitations to bring together friends and family for any occasion.
As Brent Chiu-Watson, Apple’s senior director of Worldwide Product Marketing for Apps and iCloud, explains: “With Apple Invites, an event comes to life from the moment the invitation is created, and clients can share lasting memories even after they get together.” Further, “Apple Invites brings together capabilities our clients already know and love across iPhone, iCloud, and Apple Music, making it easy to plan special events.”.
To start with Apple Invites, you must choose an image from your Photos library or select one from the app’s backgrounds gallery. This gallery elements a curated collection of images designed for various occasions and events. The invitation can connect with Apple Maps and Weather apps to give guests directions and real-time weather forecasts. For collaboration, guests can share photos and videos through a dedicated Shared Album associated with each invite.

I was wondering yesterday whether Apple Invites would have Apple Intelligence integration. Today, we found out that it does. Those with supported devices can use Image Playground, for example, to create images for the invite; they can also use Apple’s new Writing Tools to help with drafting the text of the invitation.
iPhones supporting Apple Intelligence include the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the entire iPhone 16 series.
Apple Invites requires an iCloud+ subscription to get started. Launched in 2021, iCloud+ is Apple’s premium cloud storage service that enhances the free iCloud offering. It provides consumers with increased storage capacity for their photos, videos, files, and backups and several additional privacy elements.
It will be interesting to see whether Apple Invites catches on with clients and how it develops over time. Stay tuned.
