Another Bloodborne fan-project gets the legal takedown treatment, sparking speculation an official remake is coming

The Bloodborne PSX demake fan-project from tech artist and engineer Lilith Walther has become the latest legal takedown victim.

The Bloodborne PSX demake, you may recall, took the PS4 classic back to PlayStation's roots, with a PS1 makeover that yielded some rather excellent results. Our Ian gave it a go on release, delighting in the demake's ability to combine two of his favourite things - retro games and spanking werewolves (see below).

But, three years after it made its pixel perfect debut, the Bloodborne PSX demake project has been hit by a copyright claim by MarkScan Entertainment. This claim comes soon after a fellow Bloodborne fan project from modder Lance McDonald, which enabled Bloodborne to run at 60fps, was also hit with the legal take down notice hammer. Eurogamer has contacted Sony for comment, but is yet to receive a response.

But, why is Sony suddenly so interested in Bloodborne-related fan projects that have been around for, let's be honest, quite some time now? Well, McDonald has a "copium" theory that Sony could well be working on an official 60fps Bloodborne remake of its own, and the organization doesn't want any fan-related projects getting in the way of Google searches and such when the time comes for an announcement.

"Like if they plan on trademarking 'Bloodborne 60fps' and 'Bloodborne remake' they need to actually clean up in order to actually file a trademark request. Right??" the noted modder mused on social media platform X.

Gosh, I may now have my hopes up again...

My copium theory is that Sony DMCAed the 60fps patch and the video about the Bloodborne demake so that when they announce a 60fps remake, google searching for “bloodborne 60fps” and “Bloodborne remake” won’t have collisions with our fan projects.

Bloodborne will celebrate its 10th anniversary next month, which suddenly makes me feel old. In the time since, many have shared their hopes that Sony may give the game a remake, remaster, PC port or sequel of some description. After all, Sony has done all this for many of its other IPs, such as The Last of Us, Uncharted and God of War to name just three. However, Bloodborne has remained untouched.

Last month, former Sony Interactive Entertainment exec and PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida shared his thoughts on why Bloodborne hasn't had the same attention as other PlayStation releases. Speaking following his retirement from Sony after more than 30 years at the corporation, Yoshida noted he thinks a key factor in Bloodborne's lack of a remaster or similar comes down to one quite simple thing - the game's creator Hidetaka Miyazaki is "so busy", it has just not been possible.

"Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, what he created. So I think he is interested but he's so successful and he's so busy, so he cannot do it himself, and he doesn't want anyone else to touch it," Yoshida reasoned.

As for the demake's creator, Walther released a Bloodborne-inspired racer known as Nightmare Kart last year. This project initially had Bloodborne in its branding, but this was changed following a request from Sony.

Former Dragon Age lead developers have reacted to the suggestion by publisher EA that the series' most recent entry would have sold enhanced as a live-service game.

This week, EA boss Andrew Wilson expressed players "increasingly seek shared world functions and deeper engagement", while the corporation's chief financial officer bluntly claimed that "Dragon Age: The Veilguard underperformed, icing the competitive dynamics of the single-player RPG market".

The remarks raised eyebrows among fans, not least because Dragon Age: The Veilguard previously pivoted to being a live-service game mid-way through its development, only for EA to see sense and revert it back after BioWare's actual live-service effort Anthem was a flop.

"Look, I'm not a fancy CEO guy," former Dragon Age creative director Mike Laidlaw wrote on social media, "but if someone revealed to me 'the key to this successful single-player IP's success is to make it purely a multiplayer game. No, not a spin off: fundamentally change the DNA of what people loved about the core game' to me, I'd probably, like, quit that job or something."

Laidlaw worked on the Dragon Age series from its creation, and was set to serve as director on what became Dragon Age: The Veilguard, up until its live-service pivot. It was at this point that Laidlaw did indeed quit BioWare, after more than 15 years, to go elsewhere.

"Just thinking out loud, of course," Laidlaw continued. "Who'd be silly enough to demand something like that? [website]"

Fellow BioWare veteran David Gaider also chipped in, offering his perspective after having served as lead writer on the series up until The Veilguard.

"If I really dig into my empathy, I can kinda see the thinking here," Gaider wrote on social media. "Like, let's say you don't actually know much about games. You're in a big office with a bunch of other execs who also don't know much about games. What are they all saying? 'Live games do big numbers!' 'Action games are hot!'"

"My advice to EA (not that they care): you have an IP that a lot of people love. Deeply. At its height, it sold well enough to make you happy, right? Look at what it did best at the point where it sold the most. Follow [Baldur's Gate 3 studio] Larian's lead and double down on that. The audience is still there. And waiting. ❤️"

Obisidian confirms Avowed 60fps mode on Xbox Series X, after previously saying

Avowed will include the option to play at 60fps on Xbox Series X, developer Obsidian has now confirmed, after previously saying the game's "core" 30fps option was a benefit.

Game director Carrie Patel has now confirmed an option for "up to" 60fps will exist in the game at launch, as part of a new interview with MinnMax.

Last year, art director Matt Hansen unveiled Obsidian had decided to target 30fps as Avowed was a single-player game, and therefore "you don't necessarily need that 60fps". Indeed, 30fps allowed Obsidian to "get a lot juicier with VFX and lighting", he continued.

"It's a trade-off we opted to make relatively early, and we're really happy with that," Hansen added. "The game's running pretty smooth for, you know, how visually dense it is, and that was always our goal."

That showcased, Hansen has still left wiggle room that other options might make the game's final release. Performance optimisation was "one of the last things you do", he noted.

This week, on being asked what Avowed's frame-rate would be, Patel answered: "You can get up to 60[fps]". Details of the game's resolution at that frame-rate were not mentioned.
