Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny remastered is coming to PC this year

Call me a cynic if you must, but I'm generally sceptical when someone proposes to be "the greatest swordsman of all demons". It's the sort of boast most demon swordsman like to trot out, in my experience. And yet! I have to admit that this Gogandantess lad has a real flourish to him. He's going places, I reckon. Chief among those places being PC at some point in 2025, and he's bringing the rest of Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny with him. Catch him showing off in the below trailer.

If the action series passed you by in its heyday, it's basically peak early 2000s Capcom. It started life as a twinkle in Street Fighter 2 producer Yoshiki Okamoto eye, whose original concept was to create 'Sengoku Biohazard' - a historical Japanese take on the Resident Evil series. Throw in a little of Devil May Cry's flashy theatrics and some proto-Nioh combat based on parrying and slashing hulking Yokai, and you've got a series that's been rendered far less unique by time but felt very different for the day.

The first game in the series, 2001's Onimusha: Warlords, saw a Steam remaster in 2019. At Large Geoff's Muppetshading Fest last year, we got news that Capcom were working on their first proper series entry in years in Onimusha Way Of The Sword. That one's slated for sometime in 2026. Capcom teased a few more details in a video yesterday. It's set around Kyoto in the Edo period, and yes, you'll be hitting demons with a sword and sucking their souls through your gauntlet, as is the proper way of things.

It's a very exciting time to be a lapsed Onimusha fan. These were never my absolute favourites, although I do have found memories, and I'm generally excited when Capcom do basically anything these days. There was something in that burger, I tell you.

Peripeteia is perpetual pit of immersive sim despair dripping with post-Soviet bleakness, out in early access next month

Peripeteia feels like what I'd get if I asked a wasp to describe Deus Ex to me. It has sharp, insectoid qualities. Unwelcoming but oddly comfortable in its rusty soviet Ozymandism. The first sign of sentient life this immersive sim offers me is the greeting of a gasmasked freakdroid as I leave a warehouse. Tinny propaganda songs play from TVs too big to comfortably fit in anyone's car. The warehouse is so huge I thought it was outside until I looked up and there was writing on the sky and I realised it was a roof. I'm still messed up about it, honestly.

The freakbot's dialogue is all casually hyper-detailed cyberpunk patois. Slick and bitty. This feels like a world with depth sinking into itself. Hell yeah I'm into it.

He gives me an augmentation that lets me dilate time. It is made of bones. This is the most amount of spine I've had in an inventory for ages, and it's even got a skull attached. Also, a silenced rifle. I'm off to the planetarium to do a task for the bot in exchange for info. The city feels almost oceanic in its blues and greens and silvers, and also because there's a lot of piss and garbage in it. There's also maybe a tiny sliver of piss in the code. It's all a bit choppy but I'm treating that as text for now. The city is vast. A necropolis no-one bothered to show up to after death that now just feels incredibly dejected and morose about the whole thing.

I never make it to the planetarium. The city goes too deep and I want to see the bottom of it. You will probably make more progress than me. I need to luxuriate with this thing. It's the kind of cyberpunk I like. Human thought and conciousness? I barely noosphere. There's a demo on Steam here.

Rick Lane chatted to the devs for RPS a while back:

"I want to immerse the player in a world of propaganda and perspective," says Snake, one of the games two leads. "A place where belief, ideology, and demons of the past meet in a cyber future." But this is filtered through Poland's unique history. "The game will in places explore elements of Polish culture of the 19th and 20th Century," says the game's programming lead Shodanon, including "Polish messianism, the work of Polish modernists, the anti-communist movements".

Peripeteia is out in early access on February 21, 2025.

The Sims 1 and 2 are coming back to PC this week with all original expansion packs, says report

The Sims and The Sims 2 are getting digital PC versions with all their original expansion packs included, and should be released by the end of the week, say Kotaku. The investigation follows teases made by the official Sims account on X as part of a 25th anniversary celebrations roadmap, as well as a few other scattered hints in various bits of promo as collated by Redditor skyline7284. ", both games will be released digitally on PC later this week," write Kotaku.

The first two Sims games released in 2000 and 2004 respectively, but neither domestic simulation game has been easy to play on PC for years. Rebecca Jones (RPS in peace) had to install The Sims on a Windows Vista machine from 2008 to revisit it in 2023, and the Sims 2 has long been offline, with the last digital copies removed from sale in 2014 around the time that The Sims 3 released.

The next Sims thing, Project Rene, is still in development, although EA have mentioned that it won't be Sims 5, technically. "The Sims will move beyond linear, sequential Sims releases and offer more options for players than ever before," they blogged last September. "We're focused on creating a variety of games and experiences that will touch different categories across the simulated life genre including cozy games, social and collaborative based gameplay, mobile narrative games and continued depth, improvements, and modernization of The Sims 4, which will continue to be a foundational Sims experience."

Paradox cancelled their own Sims competitor Life By You last year, and laid off staff following what one developer called "a month in purgatory". They've since stated they'd like to take another crack at a similar game.
