Avowed's rarest ending has only been seen by 0.2% of players and demands you make the correct choice at every major quest to not get your head chopped off

After finishing Avowed, I started digging into the different ending slide possibilities and was shocked at just how many permutations there are. Its most challenging and hidden ending not only demands a game-long commitment, it also leaves the Living Lands in its roughest possible state while all your companions hate your guts. Spoilers ahead for Avowed's endings.

It's foreshadowed throughout Avowed that you have the option of siding with Kreia meets Legate Lanius antagonist, Lödwyn, and her fanatical Steel Garrote paladins. Like Avowed's other endings, you're not locked out of the Steel Garrote ending by any major choices, but things don't exactly go your way if you haven't been ideologically coherent.

If you didn't consistently make choices Lödwyn approves of, siding with her against the other factions results in her giving you a traitor's reward before the credits roll: She chops your dang head off, and then narrates an abbreviated version of the ending slide sequence where she takes over the continent without you.

Big Dan Gaming on YouTube has a guide on how to side with Lödwyn and not get killed before the curtain falls, unlocking the "Tyranny" achievement currently held by only [website] of players on Steam at the time of writing. Basically, you have to make the most pro-Aedyr, pro-Lödwyn, or anti-Sapadal choice at every major crossroads in the main story. The specific key choices are:

If you gain Lödwyn's approval through these choices before siding with the Steel Garrote, she knights you at the end of the game instead of killing you. Hope it was worth it: All of your companions abandon you for this choice, and the ending slide show makes it clear that Lödwyn's vision for the Living Lands is her boot stamping on a face forever.

Not the ending for me, but a great example of how your choices actually matter in Avowed. Obsidian's latest really has a comparable level of written reactivity to Baldur's Gate 3, with quests not breaking if you finish them out of order, as well as characters making reference to surprisingly small choices and character background details. Avowed mainly falls behind with its lack of systemic interactions, and I still don't think I've seen a game with quite as many edge case accommodations as Baldur's Gate 3.

But I've really enjoyed how Avowed told its story, as well as the way it provides a (literal) new perspective on Pillars of Eternity's setting of Eora. This may not be the last we see of Avowed either: Project director Carrie Patel has indicated that Obsidian is open to doing sequels or DLC down the line.

Massive Oblivion remake mod Skyblivion shows off the final region its devs have just finished laying the foundations of in new gameplay at C3

Massive Oblivion remake mod Skyblivion shows off the final region its devs have just finished laying the foundations of in new gameplay at C3

Skyblivion, the massive modding project that’s remaking The Elder Scrolls IV in Skyrim’s engine, has just shown off some fresh quest gameplay at C3 (Community Creations Con) ahead of its 2025 release.

What was intended to be about half an hour of quest gameplay turned into about 40 minutes, but hey, sometimes you just walk into a building and an NPC you're used to being in one place has decided to cheekily sit out of the way.

As you'd expect given the Skyblivion team hit the major milestone of finishing up landscaping work on the final region of Cyrodiil they had to finish that key stage for - the Niben Basin and Valley - earlier this week, the gameplay shown off this time mainly focused on the area in and around the city of Cheydinhal.

We got quick runthroughs of two quests - the Fighters Guild one that tasks you with resolving Biene Amelion's debt and a true classic in the form of 'A Brush with Death'. If the latter's name doesn't ring a bell, it's the one that sees you walk into dark elf Rythe Lythandas' painted world in order to free the poor artist with the magic brush.

In both cases, the thing that really stuck out was just how detailed and polished Skyblivion's worldspaces and the stuff contained within them looks at this point in development. At one point, project lead Kyle 'Rebelzize' Rebel just did the walk into Cheydinhal I've done a million times in both vanilla and modded Oblivion, and it brought a smile to my face to see how well it seems the team has maintained the nostalgic soul of the thing, while filing away some of its rougher, more 2006 edges.

The painted world itself was a great example of this - playing vanilla Oblivion in 2025, it feels like a little room that might not be too special if it wasn't able to lean into the game's already very oil paintingy aesthetic to form something visually special. In Skyblivion, it's a longer, more fully fleshed-out dungeon that packs a similar visual punch despite Skyrim's more realistic art style, and ends in an environment deliberately textured to look just like unpainted canvas.

Another detail worth picking out here was the mod's new interaction menu UI, which has been overhauled into something unique that brings a lot more Oblivion vibes to help offset the more Skyrim-style inventory, compass, and map the mod has - as you'd expect, given it's running in TES V. Also, while battling skeleton enemies, you may suddenly realise you've just killed one with a tail. Why? Well, because the modders have put together unique skeletons for elves and best races, which is a step beyond even Skyrim.

There's still no concrete release date for the mod to narrow down the general 2025 window it's had for a little while, but the modders did reiterate in this showcase: "We are confident we can get it out this year".

What did you think of this latest look at Skyblivion? Let us know below and make sure to check out the interview we've literally just done with Skyblivion project lead Rebel, especially if you want to know how the modders feel about those official Oblivion remake rumours.

Monster Hunter Wilds finally makes sense to my Dark Souls-pilled brain thanks to the Dual Blades

Monster Hunter Wilds finally makes sense to my Dark Souls-pilled brain thanks to the Dual Blades

Over a decade enjoying Eldensoulsborne games should have cured me of any pride or hubris. Alas, I am an imperfect vessel. Monster Hunter's combat, which I once wrongly assumed would come easily to me with my Souls-lover badge in hand, has always thwarted me, dooming me to forever watch my friends battle their dinosaurs without ever donning the hunter's mantle myself. Until I equipped the dual blades in Monster Hunter Wilds, that is. Now I finally get it.

I bounced off Monster Hunter World not once, but twice—first on PS4 in 2017 and then again when it launched on PC later that year. Any time my Monster Hunter veteran friends would pull me into a hunt, I'd watch them shred that early game Anjanath while I struggled to get a single hit in. Embarrassing.

Something about the specific input delay, the heaviness of the dodge roll, and the character movement eluded me. I'd get stuck slashing at empty air half a second after a monster turned away or swiped with a tail I failed to dodge more times than I care to admit.

I never did successfully wrestle Monster Hunter World to my will. I skipped over Monster Hunter Rise, detoured to the turn-based combat in Monster Hunter Stories 2 (which I did enjoy), and started sweating as Monster Hunter Wilds approached knowing that I could crash out again, fated to FOMO.

Things started badly for me in the beta. Should I have known enhanced than to grab the switch axe first again? Yes, but I've already established that pride was my downfall. The same slightly-too-slow reactions and whiffing at monsters initially plagued me and I worried I was once again going to fail at becoming a hunter.

One of my MonHun sicko colleagues saved me with a nudge to try the dual blades again and it was like I could at last hear the divine chorus of hunters past singing across the ages. The pace of dual blade strikes actually gels with my style and the dodge roll doesn't leave me underfoot of my quarry.

Dual blade "blade dance" combos are quick and slick. I can sheathe them to heal faster than with larger weapons. The Demon Mode and its specific ability to dodge through incoming attacks was made for a Souls player. Our dual blade builds explainer might put it into MonHunter parlance more effective than I am, but damn it, the knives feel good. I finally feel like the Souls player in me is an asset, not badly-tuned muscle memory holding me back.

Even the quiet side conversations among PCG's veteran hunters asking "do the dual blades feel too easy this time?" cannot dampen my spirit. I went Beyblade on a Balahara's ass and I feel alive. I'm finally killing monsters all by myself—well, aside from my Palico—without an SOS flare or getting carted by the most basic early-game enemies.

It's not all just down to the weapon choice though. As explained in our Monster Hunter Wilds review, there is a very "streamlined" feel that it brings to the series. Parts of Wilds are still archaic as hell, but the Focus Mode system that lets me aim melee attacks and the wound system (more on that in our Monster Hunter Wilds tips) that powers the above-mentioned dual (bey)blade effect, are a big part of what's helping me feel more at home here.

Maybe Souls players who favor greatswords and hammers have found their skills more obviously transferable to Monster Hunter games already. There's at least one unfortunate hollow among the PC Gamer significant others who's with me in the competent-Souls-player-to-failed-monster-hunter pipeline, so I suspect there may be literally dozens more of us around the world. I say unto the rest of ye: main dual blades. At least to start with.
