Frantic 2D Metroidvania Cookie Cutter finally gets Nintendo Switch release

Subcult Joint's frantic 2D Metroidvania, Cookie Cutter, is finally coming to Nintendo Switch.
As well as the base game, in which players "punch, stab, slice, and maul enemies as Cherry, a take-no-prisoners fembot trying to survive a twisted planet on the brink of destruction", the Switch Overkill Edition boasts three updates and upgrades, including fully voiced dialogue for every character, new map attributes, and brand-new special moves and upgrades for Cherry.
Other new functions include new cinematics to "add more style and background to the story", "tons" of gameplay tweaks and progression balancing, and a handful of special Nintendo Switch-flavoured easter eggs, too.
There's also now a new feature that helps you "gauge completion status".
"Love turns to rage and chainsaws in Cookie Cutter, a bold new take on the Metroidvania sub-genre," teases the blurb. "Cookie Cutter functions gorgeous hand-drawn animation, an enormous dystopian world to explore, epic boss fights, gruesome carnage, and so much more."
As yet there's no firm release date, but publisher Rogue Games hints it'll be "this spring"/Q2. Players on PC via Steam, PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series X/S don't have to wait, of course - Cherry's already waiting for you.

Gamescom Asia and Thailand Game Show merge to form Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show

Gamescom Asia and Thailand Game Show have merged to form Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show.
Set to debut in October, the organizations stated the merger "unites the best of both worlds: a powerful global business and consumer platform and an electrifying fan-focused gaming experience."
Previously, and individually, Gamescom Asia attracted over 40,000 attendees from 78 countries and 177 exhibitors in 2024, whilst the Thailand Game Show recorded over 185,000 visitors and 50 exhibitors.
"This partnership is a game-changer for the region’s games industry. Gamescom Asia’s success has been built on a solid foundation in Singapore, where it has flourished since its inception in 2021, positioning Southeast Asia as a hub for gaming innovation," noted Mathias Kuepper, MD and VP of Asia Pacific at Koelnmesse.
"By joining forces with Thailand Game Show, we are unlocking unprecedented opportunities to connect global video game players with one of the world’s most vibrant and passionate gaming communities. With its rich culture and expanding gaming ecosystem, Bangkok is the ideal stage for this exciting next chapter."
"This historic collaboration presents tremendous opportunities for gamers and developers in Thailand, marking a significant leap forward for our gaming industry," added Pongsuk Hiranprueck, founder of Thailand Game Show.
"With strong governmental support and cooperation, we are solidifying Thailand's position as a premier gaming hub in the Asian region. We are grateful for Gamescom Asia recognising Thailand's potential, and together, we will write a new chapter in Thailand's gaming history that will elevate our industry to unprecedented heights. This partnership will build on what we have been doing for the past 18 years."
Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show will take place at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok, Thailand, from 16 to 19 October 2025. Attendees can expect a "multifaceted event" featuring a dedicated business area, expert-led industry gaming conference sessions, and an entertainment area showcasing the "latest AAA titles, indie games, esports tournaments, cosplay, , and live experiences."
Gamescom Asia broke its attendance record last October, with 41,013 people going to the Singapore-based show last week. This represented a 20% increase in attendance, organiser Koelnmesse expressed, with 177 exhibitors joining the event this year, versus 136 in 2023.

GDC Awards 2025 to honor Sam Lake and Lucas Pope

The Game Developers Choice Awards organised have introduced this year's recipients for its Lifetime Achievement and Pioneer Award categories.
This year's Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Remedy's creative director Sam Lake, with the Pioneer Award will be given to independent game designer Lucas Pope.
Lake has been working at the Finnish developer for over three decades, having been involved in writing, directing, and acting in Remedy's franchises including Max Payne, Alan Wake, Quantum Break, and Control.
Last month, Lake received the Andrew Yoon Legend Award at the 14th Annual New York Game Awards.
Pope has been in the games industry for over two decades, and is the creative force behind experimental indie hits Paper's, Please and Return of the Obra Dinn.
The designer also worked at Naughty Dog on projects including Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
"[Pope] has pushed the bar for gaming narratives and mechanics through his work," the organisers stated. "He has tried to make things that others don't, exploring new genres and new ways of telling interesting stories."
The Lifetime Achievement and Pioneer Awards were voted for by 2025's Game Developers Choice Editorial Committee, with suggestions from the International Choice Awards Network.
"The GCD Awards has a proud legacy of shining the spotlight on figures who make gaming the most gripping and evocative method of storytelling," expressed GDC event director Stephenie Hawkins.
"We're excited to recognise Sam Lake and Lucas Pope for their commitments to pushing the boundaries of the medium through transcendent narrative structures, complex moral questions, and evocative gameplay."
The awards ceremony will take place on March 19 during the Game Developers Conference at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
The finalists for the GDC Awards were unveiled last month, with Astro Bot and Black Myth: Wukong receiving the most nominations.
