EA CEO says a "more meaningful update" of Apex Legends is in development

EA CEO says a

Despite "performing in line with expectations," net bookings for Apex Legends were down year-over-year during Electronic Arts' Q3 FY25.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson reflected on the franchise's future during the earnings call Q&A, where he laid out the firm's plan to implement changes to improve Apex Legends – including the idea of 'Apex [website]'.

During EA's Q2, Wilson pushed back against the idea of an Apex [website] to fix the franchise, but has now revealed it's in the pipeline.

"The trajectory of the business of that franchise has not been headed in the direction that we have wanted for some time," he explained. "We continue to test and develop more and great content for that community. And I would say we have seen some progress in that, but probably not as much as we would have liked.

"We do believe there will be a time where we need to do a more meaningful revision of Apex as a broad game experience, and the team is diligently working on that. You should imagine we probably wouldn't drop that on top of a Battlefield launch [which is slated for 2026]. And so from a timing standpoint, our thinking right now is that that would exist post-Battlefield."

Wilson continued: "On a longer-term horizon, these franchises that exist at this level and have this much fan love don't come often. What I think we've demonstrated as a organization is an ability to build franchises that last 10, 20, 30 years.

Our expectation is that Apex will also be one of those franchises, and that some time on the horizon, there will be an even bigger, more meaningful improvement to that broader game experience – an Apex [website] if you will. This will not be the final incarnation of Apex."

EA recorded declines in revenue and net bookings for its third quarter, which Wilson described as "not the financial performance we wanted or expected." This was mainly due to the "temporary underperformance" of EA Sports FC 25.

"It's a mecha fan's dream" Over 300,000 players have suited up for Mecha Break’s Steam demo

A demo for the upcoming mecha PvP shooter, Mecha Break, has soared up the Steam charts, and it's not even out yet. An open beta / demo, which was released last night, has already hit a peak of 317,522 players. That's a lot of mecha fans!

Mecha Break — developed by Amazing Seasun Games and first revealed at The Game Awards back in 2023 — has gradually been building up steam over the past year or so. There were some earlier closed preview events held; I even went to one back in April 2024 and came away thoroguhly impressed. All this plus an earlier open beta seems to have built towards this explosive drop.

The demo currently has mixed reviews on Steam for a variety of reasons. The positive reviews are there and vast, with one player, Arshaiden, describing it as "a mecha fan's dream" and various others falling in love with the feel of piloting each mech and the fast paced PvP gameplay. It seems like a breath of fresh air for many, which is a good sign for the game's longevity.

As for negative reviews, they come in various forms. Some are unhappy with the state of the beta, the peeks at microtransactions present and pay-to-win implications it creates, and others are perturbed with the kernel-level anti-cheat that the game requires. Of course, there are some who just don't like the game either, but it's looking like a war on 3-main fronts when it comes to the Mecha Break dislikers.

There's no stated open beta end date as of yet, which is peculiar, but nonetheless it should act as further fuel to fire your eagerness to try out Mecha Break if it sounds like something you'd be in to. Give it a download and let us know what you think of it down below!

Was making the PS5 Pro so expensive a mistake? It's probably still too early to tell, but the pace of sales have apparently fallen behind the PS4 Pro's

The PS5 Pro was seemingly off to a good start, but recent sales data has apparently put its pace behind the PS4 Pro around the same time after launch.

I originally got my PS5 about two years after everybody else, primarily because, well, I write about games for a living so figured I should catch up, and despite thinking the platform didn't have many exclusives to help make it worth it, I figured they'd come down the line. That didn't really happen, as more and more developers are moving towards multiplatform releases, including Xbox, which might even bring titles like Halo to rival platforms. Then, last September, Sony unveiled the PS5 Pro, a $700 console that doesn't come with a disc drive, and, oh yeah, you'll have to pay even more if you want one. It was a ridiculous thing to witness, but I knew this was for a select group of people that didn't include me (and not just because I couldn't afford something like that).

I still couldn't help but wonder how well it would do, and in November, the launch month for the upgraded piece of hardware, Sony even stated that the price point didn't seem to have a negative impact on sales. That might still technically be true for all we know, but over on BlueSky games industry analyst Mat Piscatella from Circana shared that as it stands, the "PS5 Pro has fallen behind PS4 Pro's pace" in terms of sales three months in. To be clear, I don't think that the price is necessarily the reason behind that slowing pace, but I do think the general state of things might be.

PS5 Pro has fallen behind PS4 Pro's pace. Digital SKUs accounted for 49% of PS5 HW units in Jan and 88% of XBS units. — Mat Piscatella ([website] February 21, 2025 at 2:29 PM.

Prices are up across all industries compared to a few years ago, people just have less money to spend, particularly on a console where big tentpole games keep getting cancelled, and where the platform creator hosts showcases with next to no first-party exclusives (all of which will come to PC, albeit a shabby state, eventually anyway).

It's always possible the PS5 Pro could pick up pace again further down the line, but Piscatella also noted that hardware sales are down across the board, with PS5 spending down 38%, Xbox by 50%, and Switch by 53%. That last one is probably because of the imminent Switch 2, but we're still yet to learn about a price for that one.

Honestly, let's just hope pointless mid-gen hardware upgrades die with this generation, especially when some of the tech you use is called PSSR, for heaven's sake.
