Civilization 7 data mining uncovers new leaders, Atomic Age

Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 doesn’t officially launch until Feb. 11, but that hasn’t stopped folks from data mining the strategy game during its advanced access period and potentially uncovering future content.
A user of the r/civ subreddit shared their findings after exploring the Civilization 7 code over the weekend. This digging found mention of new civilizations like the Ottomans, Maori, Tonga, Iceland, and Pirate Republic; leaders Edward “Blackbeard” Teach, Sayyida al-Hurra, and Whina Cooper; a “wonders pack” focused on the Asian continent; and even a whole new Atomic Age supposedly meant to follow the Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern eras already in the game.
A representative for Civilization 7 developer Firaxis Games declined to comment on this info.
“We very deliberately did not push into the Cold War time period because that is one that just felt very different than the rest of the Modern Age,” Civilization 7 lead designer Ed Beach lately told IGN. “It just sort of dips its toes in the Cold War, like you’ve identified with the thermonuclear device being the one that ends the military victory path there.”.
“You can imagine the possibilities with this, honestly,” executive producer Dennis Shirk added when asked directly about a fourth Age. “The way that the design team set it up so that each age is chock-full of systems, visuals, units, Civs, all specific to that age, and what you could do with that and where you could take it… we can’t talk about the specifics. We can just talk about it in generalities. We’re excited for where this is going to go.”.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is so realistic it's been used in a driver fatigue experiment

As the purveyor of ultimate dad games SCS Software explains on its blog, Euro Truck Simulator 2 isn't just a fun exploration of the contrast between chill highway cruising and nightmarish reverse-parking situations. It's also science.
A researcher at Liberec Technical University's Faculty of Textiles in Czechia called Mr Martinka has been using Euro Truck Simulator 2 to simulate driving while fatigued without endangering anyone. "ETS2 was the simplest and the most practical solution because it mirrors real driving conditions. The game allowed us to simulate fatigue safely. We needed a reliable platform to simulate long hours of driving, and the game provided exactly that," Martinka mentioned.
Martinka's study put test subjects in a car seat with a steering wheel, sat in front of Euro Truck Simulator 2 for up to seven hours at a stretch. Which sounds like how I spent my weekends in 2014. "We drove continuously, replicating fatigue-inducing conditions until we were genuinely exhausted and wanted to sleep," Martinka expressed.
The point of this study was to develop a improved way of detecting the exact moment when drivers enter microsleep. Martinka's solution, a "smart T-Shirt," keeps track of the wearer's breathing patterns. "While modern cars often feature fatigue sensors," Martinka explained, "they are not always accurate. Our smart T-Shirt, on the other hand, provides a more reliable solution. The sensors in the T-Shirt are nearly invisible, washable, and far more precise in detecting fatigue than standard car systems".
A follow-up study is planned for later this year in Japan, again making use of Euro Truck Simulator 2.
While SCS Software followed its unlikely truck-driving hit with American Truck Simulator in 2016, it's continued supporting Euro with cosmetics like the recent Greek Mythology Pack, which lets you spray Medusa or the pegasus on the side of your truck. No Hypnos, god of sleep, though. Stop, revive, survive!

GAME "scalping" Pokémon cards, staff say, demanding £20 shipping to post small tin

UK retailer GAME has been slammed by shop staff and store end-consumers for charging £[website] delivery on small tins containing the latest Pokémon cards, which are in hot demand nationwide.
Stock of the new Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet - Prismatic Evolutions card set is extremely hard to find with many toy shops and supermarkets selling out. But GAME is still taking pre-orders for the set's new £11 Mini Tins - if you stump up a £[website] delivery fee, which nearly triples your overall purchase price.
Speaking to Eurogamer anonymously to protect their jobs, GAME staff say the situation amounts to the chain effectively "scalping" their own supplies, and clients. Employees say they've been left exasperated by the chain's handling of the popular Pokémon cards' release, and had to deal with angry clients left unable to buy the cards in-store on release day.
GAME staff say that too much of the chain's stock of Prismatic Evolutions cards has been put up for sale online, rather in actual GAME stores or concessions. Additionally, staff say, the small amount of stock sent out to GAME shops has also arrived late, meaning end-consumers who popped in on the set's launch day left empty handed - despite staff previously being told that stock would arrive on time. One staff member claimed their store had been sent a single TCG card pack.
"We're constantly taking the brunt of abuse from consumers and the enterprise itself," one staff member told Eurogamer, saying they felt they had been lied to by bosses after they'd been told to reassure consumers their store would get stock on a certain date - only for it not to turn up.
Online, meanwhile, Pokémon card stock such as the £11 Prismatic Evolutions tins is only available to buy with that £[website] fee - for what the chain is describing as an "Oversized Delivery" that will arrive in three to five working days.
GAME typically charges £[website] for a Standard Delivery, or alternatively you can pay £[website] to Collect in Store (also both three to five working days). If you really want to splash out, you can spend £[website] on some items for Next Day Delivery by DPD.
Checking online today, none of these cheaper options are available for the new Pokémon card tins.
So why are these cards an Oversized Delivery? Staff say they have questioned their bosses about the matter - initially thinking it was a mistake - only to be told the decision was deliberate.
These Mini Tins (which describe themselves as offering "Pokémon Favourites in the Palm of Your Hand!") are no larger than a smartphone. At the same time, GAME still offers its usual £[website] Standard Delivery option for much bulkier items - including consoles such as a new PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch.
GAME staff say they had initially assumed the Oversized Delivery requirement is a mistake, only to be told by bosses that it wasn't, without any further explanation.
Last year, Eurogamer 's ongoing issues, the difficulties faced by shop floor staff amidst store closures, relentless redundancies, and a head office that was failing to deal with stock problems. At the time, staff told us the chain was losing touch with consumers.
