Acer’s newest Helios gaming laptops pack RTX 5070 power

Acer’s Helios laptops are gaming designs in the classic sense: big, chunky, and chock-full of high-power parts. The newest models of the Predator Helios Neo AI line don’t break with that tradition, upgrading to the latest Intel processors and newest Nvidia graphics cards. They’ll arrive in a few months in 16-inch and 18-inch flavors.

Acer calls the Predator Helios Neo 18 AI (good grief, what a name) a “desktop replacement” design, [website] technically portable as long as you lift with your legs. The 18-inch chunkster weighs just a hair under [website] pounds, that’s [website] kilograms if you live in a civilized country. For that workout you’re rewarded with a choice of Ultra 7 255HX (20-core) or Ultra 9 275HX (24-core) processors from Intel, either an RTX 5070 or 5070 Ti from Nvidia, and “up to” 64GB of RAM and 2TB of storage.

The screen is obviously on the bigger side at 18 inches, but oddly tops out with a 2560×1600 mini-LED display at a speedy 250Hz. The base model comes with a more utilitarian 1200p resolution and 165Hz, which should still look silky-smooth on all but the most visually splendiferous of games. The battery is a 90 watt-hour model, and despite being roomy, I wouldn’t expect it to last very long at all if you’re blasting through a session of Deliverance II.

That big body has plenty of room for ports: double USB-C plus HDMI and a barrel charger on the back, two USB-A on the right, and a third USB-A, Ethernet, MicroSD, and headphone jack on the left. Note the large rear lip, the advanced to handle its cooling system with “5th Gen AeroBlade 3D Fans” and liquid metal thermal grease. Finally rounding out the spec list is a rather ho-hum 1080p webcam, but it does have infrared for Windows Hello.

The Predator Helios Neo 18 AI (deep breath) is scheduled for release in North America in May with a starting price of $2,[website] It’ll hit Europe, the Middle East, and Asia the following month starting at 1,799 euros.

If you want something a little more portable — not that much more portable, but less hernia-inducing — the Helios Neo 16 AI tips the scales at “just” [website] kilograms (a little under 6 pounds). Specs are identical for the most part, with the obvious exception of the 16-inch screen. It’s offered with an OLED panel at the top end, again 2560×1600, and a hair slower at 250Hz. The base model LCD is 1920×1200, but a little faster at 180Hz.

Ports and layout are the same too, and Acer impressively managed to cram a nearly full-sized keyboard onto the 16-inch model. The 90 watt-hour battery is the same size, but again, don’t expect this thing to win any endurance races if you’re gaming. It’s hitting the market a little faster: April in North America for $1,[website], May in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia starting at 1,699 euros.

AMD Ryzen 5 7400F De-Lid Reveals Thermal Paste Instead of STIM

Priced at the equivalent of $116, the China--core/12-thread processor powered by the older "Zen 4" microarchitecture, but which is based on the "Raphael" MCM, giving it a comprehensive PCIe Gen 5 I/O (as opposed to designing such a chip based on the "Phoenix Point" monolithic silicon with its PCIe Gen 4 I/O). The chip benefits from the full 32 MB on-die L3 cache being enabled on the "Zen 4" CCD, besides the full 1 MB per core L2 cache, and that I/O, but misses out on the iGPU. At its price, the 7400F is attracting a segment of value-conscious [website] bring this chip at its price point, AMD had to cut costs somewhere, and Chinese PC enthusiast "Melon Master" soon found out where. On de-lidding (removing IHS) of the Ryzen 5 7400F, it was found that the chip does not use a soldered TIM like the other Ryzen 7000 series "Raphael" processors, instead using more cost-effective thermal paste, as is common in entry-level chips from both AMD and Intel. Harukaze5719 comments that this could be the reason the chip has a fairly noticeable Cinebench R23 performance delta against the Ryzen 5 7500F that's globally available, and has STIM, but is priced at $145. The 7400F and 7500F share the same base frequency of [website] GHz, but while the former boosts up to [website] GHz, the latter goes all the way up to [website] GHz.

This 4K laptop with RTX 4080 and 64GB RAM is a whopping $800 off

The MSI Creator 16 is a laptop. Allegedly. But looking at the spec sheet, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a souped-up gaming rig. It’s packing an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H CPU, a Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 GPU, a 4K screen, and a whopping 64GB of RAM.

Normally, you’d pay $2,500 for this beast. Today, CDW is selling it for $1,[website] That’s a whopping $800 off. A bargain for these specs.

The MSI Creator 16 AI Studio isn’t technically a gaming laptop. It’s designed for media production. But the only real difference is that the RTX 4080 GPU is limited to “just” 105 TDP, so it’ll still whoop up on (technical term) just about anything in its price range, even with that 4K mini-LED screen showing off all the polygons it can push. The 64GB of DDR5 RAM can even be upgraded to 96GB if you want, and ditto for the 1TB SSD (with the empty [website] slot on the motherboard).

Other highlights include six speakers for rich audio, USB-C ports on BOTH SIDES, plus full-sized HDMI and a microSD card slot. This thing is hefty at about 2 kilograms ([website] pounds), and even with its gigantic [website] watt-hour battery, I wouldn’t expect it to last long at max performance.

CDW is showing a regular discount of $729, bringing the price down to $1,770. But the frugal forum-goers at [website] noticed that if you log in with a CDW account, the price drops down to $1,[website], nearly a third off the retail price. I’ve checked and it’s still active as of this writing but already back-ordered, so I’d get an order in quickly if you want this crazy-powerful laptop.
