Samsung’s Google Messages rival isn’t dead after all – in fact, it’s just been upgraded

Despite a previous statement widely interpreted as a discontinuation announcement, Samsung’s Google Messages rival is still available for Samsung Galaxy smartphone individuals – in fact, it just got a new upgrade.
Samsung Messages, which is now only available via the Samsung-run Galaxy Store app, has been upgraded to include Google’s implementation of RCS, or Rich Communication Services.
As we previously reported, RCS enables iMessage-style media sharing and group chats for phones of any platform. Samsung customers have had access to RCS via Google Messages for years.
Samsung Messages previously offered a proprietary implementation of RCS – though, as Android Authority notes, this was pulled last year as part of the switch to Google Messages as the default messaging app for Galaxy handsets.
We not long ago reported that Samsung Messages had been discontinued, and would be made totally unavailable for clients of the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, and Galaxy S25 Ultra.
This was due to a statement from Samsung, originally , which read (in part): “We have opted to migrate all services to Google Messages and are sunsetting Samsung Messages. It’s no longer available in the Play Store; however, those who chose to utilize Samsung Messages are still able to do so.”.
Though our coverage, as well that by others like PhoneArena, interpreted “sunsetting” as a lighter way of saying “shutting down”, Samsung later informed us that this wasn’t exactly the case.
A later statement provided to us by Samsung directly, noted: “Starting with the new models, the Samsung Messages app will no longer be preloaded. Instead, Google Messages will provide a new and enhanced experience to express your emotions, making communication safe and fun. The Samsung Messages app is still available for download from the Galaxy Store with some elements excluded.”.
The new models in question are the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, Galaxy S25 Ultra, and presumably the new Galaxy S25 Edge. Rather than losing access to Samsung Messages completely, it seems owners of the newest Samsung Galaxy phones will have to seek out the app on Samsung’s own Galaxy Store.
There’s been some back and forth about the future of Samsung Messages, but an official improvement like this indicates it is sticking around for a while, if only as a sidelined alternative to the now-default Google Messages. As a video from Sammyguru’s Jeff Springer demonstrates, Samsung Messages remains unavailable from the Google Play Store.
In any case, it’s unlikely that a messaging app reshuffle will stop the Galaxy S25 series from picking up spots on our lists of the best phones and best Samsung phones.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra went up for pre-order on January 22nd, with the final pre-order date being February 6, so if you haven't pre-ordered yet, you're now too late to do so.
If you did pre-order, you'll probably have been able to access various discounts, perks, or freebies, but for those who didn't at least the phone is now readily available.
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra went on sale on February 7, so that was its actual release date. In other words, it's now readily available, so if you order it now then it should be immediately shipped to you (assuming it’s not out of stock), and you should also be able to walk into a store and buy it.

While there were many E-Ink color displays on show in the digital signage section of ISE 2025, the Wi-Poster caught TechRadar Pro’s attention as the only one that uses wireless power.
Available in a range of sizes from 13in up to 40 inches, it’s the first working product we’ve seen that uses wireless power at a distance.
One man who saw it working at the same time as us described it as ‘magic’, and we’d have to agree.
Ori Mor, CEO and founder of Wi-Charge, told TechRadar Pro wireless power means that not only can businesses put the Wi-Poster wherever they want, but wireless power means it is effectively permanently powered.
This means images can be updated over Wi-Fi as many times as needed, without having to worry about ever having to connect it to a portable power station or a power cord to recharge batteries.
“Over time the cost of replacing batteries can really mount up so over time our wireless power solution can save businesses a lot of money, as well as greatly reducing waste. And even with a rechargeable battery you still have to spend time and cost getting power to them when they run down”.
Mor noted Wi-Charge’s wireless power solution, dubbed “AirCord” uses infra-red to send up to 350 milliwatts of power from a transmitter plugged into the mains to devices with a built-in receiver up to 10 meters away. One transmitter can send power to multiple devices at once, but every device requires a line of sight to a transmitter. The power flow ceases as soon as anything gets in the way but resumes immediately afterward.
Naturally, we wondered about the safety of sending power over the air like this, but Mor assured us that it was completely safe and has been ratified by all global standards agencies, such as the IEC and CE in Europe and FC and FCC in the USA.
As a Spectra 6 display, the Wi-Poster images looked impressively color-rich and vibrant. Virtually indistinguishable from paper, they will remain visible even under sunlight. Mor demonstrated the Wi-Poster updating, taking around 30 seconds for the image to change.
E Ink isn't suitable for video, however, and for that, Mor stated that Wi-Charge already has an ‘Aircord’ powered LCD display in the market called Wi-Spot. Available in either 7- and 9in sizes, Mor stated this was aimed primarily at product adjacent advertising for the retail market.
He mentioned the Wi-Spot also contains motion sensors, enabling businesses to gather footfall stats to provide data to optimize store layouts.
Wi-Charge also had a wirelessly powered toothbrush holder and an X-Box controller on show, though these turned out to be prototypes rather than actual products for sale.
Mor stated that Wi-Charge was not currently revealing costs for the Wi-Poster, but that businesses should get in touch with the corporation directly to discuss.
