Festplatten-Roadmap: Western Digital wechselt 2026 auf HAMR für 36 TB und mehr

Auch bei Western Digital liegt die Zukunft der Festplatten in der HAMR-Technik, die Seagate schon eingeführt hat. Die ersten HAMR-HDDs von Western Digital werden aber erst Ende 2026 erscheinen, wie der Hersteller jetzt in Form einer neuen Roadmap angekündigt hat.

Im Rahmen des Investor Day hat Western Digitals designierter CEO Irving Tan eine neue Roadmap für das HDD-Geschäft vorgelegt. Darin wird das Ende der aktuell genutzten ePMR-Technik bis zu einer Speicherkapazität von 36 TB besiegelt.

Danach soll das Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) Einzug halten. Ende 2026 sollen die ersten HAMR-Festplatten von Western Digital fertig sein. Größere Stückzahlen sind aber erst für 2027 zu erwarten, wie der CEO in der abschließenden Fragerunde vor Investoren und Medienvertretern eingeräumt hat.

Die Roadmap legt nahe, dass zunächst HAMR-HDDs mit 36 TB und konventioneller Magnetaufzeichnung (CMR) erscheinen. Mit überlappenden Datenspuren alias UltraSMR sollen 44 TB möglich werden.

Der Konkurrent Seagate bietet aktuell HAMR-Festplatten mit 30 TB (CMR) und 32 TB (SMR) an, hat aber bereits ein SMR-Modell mit 36 TB in Aussicht gestellt.

Western Digital wird nicht müde darin zu betonen, dass für den Wechsel auf HAMR der richtige Zeitpunkt gewählt werden muss. Oft hatte der Hersteller erklärt, dass HAMR noch nicht marktreif sei, während Seagate die Technik eilig in Kleinstserie auf den Markt gebracht hatte, die nach Seagates Ankündigungen eigentlich sogar Jahre früher fertig sein sollte. Bis heute ist allerdings unklar, wie viele HAMR-HDDs Seagate wirklich an Kunden ausliefert. Lange war von einer begrenzten Verfügbarkeit die Rede.

Aus Sicht von Tan müsse man mindestens eine Million Einheiten pro Quartal von einem Produkt liefern können. Der CEO betonte, dass Western Digital auch schon jetzt eine HAMR-Festplatte mit 40 TB produzieren könnte, doch wäre die Ausbeute noch nicht wirtschaftlich. Der Hersteller habe bei HAMR noch viel Arbeit vor sich, räumte Tan zudem ein.

Oppo Find X8 Pro im Test: Furioses Comeback mit starker GPU im Dimensity 9400 (Update)

Oppo feiert mit dem Find X8 Pro ein furioses Comeback auf dem deutschen Markt. Das Smartphone bietet als erstes überhaupt zwei Tele-Kameras und zeigt mit dem neuen MediaTek Dimensity 9400 im Test eine herausragende Leistung, die mitunter selbst den Snapdragon 8 Elite übertrifft.

Nach mehrere Verkaufsverboten wegen Patentstreitigkeiten startet Oppo bald nicht nur wieder in Deutschland mit dem Verkauf von Smartphones, sondern bringt nach zwei Jahren Pause mit dem Find X8 Pro auch die Find-X-Serie wieder nach Europa und den Rest der Welt, nachdem die Smartphones der Find- X6- und Find-X7-Serie offiziell nur in China verkauft wurden. Im Test zeigt nicht nur das Find X 8 Pro, was in ihm steckt, sondern auch der MediaTek Dimensity 9400 muss sich zum ersten Mal in Benchmarks beweisen. Die Quad-Kamera des Find X8 Pro wurde zusammen mit Hasselblad entwickelt, ist aber explizit kein Nachfolger für das Find X7 Ultra, das den Fokus klar auf die Kamera gelegt hat, sondern soll als kompakteres, dünneres Smartphones für mehr Nutzer attraktiver sein, die nicht in erster Linie fotografieren.

Von der Find-X8-Serie kommt ausschließlich das Find X8 Pro nach Europa. In Deutschland wird es voraussichtlich ab Anfang 2025 erhältlich sein. Die unverbindliche Preisempfehlung des Oppo Find X8 Pro beträgt [website] Euro (16GB + 512GB).

Das Oppo Find X8 Pro ist mit dem Betriebssystem ColorOS 15 ausgestattet, das auf Android 15 basiert, jedoch ein paar Anpassungen und Erweiterungen bietet. Oppo gewährt nun auch eine umfangreiche enhancement-Garantie: Security-Patches werden für sechs Jahre versprochen und fünf Android-Hauptversionen werden als enhancement bereitgestellt.

Beim SoC setzt das Oppo Find X8 Pro nicht etwa auf den Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite, sondern den MediaTek Dimensity 9400. MediaTek hat mit dem Dimensity 9400 ein High-End-SoC vorgestellt, der auf ein „All Big Core“-Design setzt, bei dem für die CPU ausschließlich große Arm-Kerne eingesetzt werden, darunter auch der neue Cortex-X925, und auf Efficiency-Kerne verzichtet wird. Groß fällt mit der Immortalis-G925 auch die neue GPU aus. Die NPU ist hingegen für Generative AI ausgelegt. So will MediaTek dem Konkurrenten Qualcomm nicht nur in der Mittelklasse Paroli bieten, sondern hat auch wieder die Leistungskrone im Blick.

Der Dimensity 9400 wird bei TSMC in der zweiten Generation der 3-nm-Fertigung produziert. Die Fertigungsstufe N3E war bislang Apple für den A18 und A18 Pro vorbehalten.

Der Dimensity 9400 im Find X8 Pro nutzt als Prime-Core den im Mai vorgestellten Cortex-X925 mit einer Taktfrequenz von bis zu 3,626 GHz. Das sind 226 MHz mehr als beim aufgebohrten Dimensity 9300+, der wiederum 150 MHz mehr bietet als der zugrundeliegende Dimensity 9300.

Unterhalb des neuen Prime-Cores sitzen beim Dimensity 9400 drei Cortex-X4 mit bis zu 3,3 GHz als Performance-Kerne, also eigentlich Prime-Kerne der vorherigen Arm-Generation, die schon beim Dimensity 9300 verbaut waren und dort Prime- und Performance-Kerne mit unterschiedlichen Taktraten bildeten. Alle verwendeten CPU-Kerne entsprechen dennoch der aktuellen [website] Als „E-Kerne“ kommen beim Dimensity 9400 unverändert vier Cortex-A720 mit bis zu 2,4 GHz zum Einsatz. Auf die eigentlichen Efficiency-Kerne A520 (Refresh) verzichtet MediaTek damit erneut. Ungeachtet dessen soll das SoC insgesamt 40 Prozent effizienter arbeiten.

Oppo reizt die Taktratenmöglichkeiten des Dimensity 9400 im Find X8 Pro voll aus. Eine aktive Kühlung des SoC wie sie Redmagic beim Gaming-Smartphone Redmagic 10 Pro und Redmagic 10 Ultra einsetzt, kommt beim Find X8 Pro aber nicht zum Einsatz, so dass das Smartphone immer flüsterleise agiert. Hierfür hat Oppo die Kühlung verändert und setzt auf eine Vapor Chamber mit Graphit-Schicht und Wärmeleitpaste, die zur gleichmäßigen Verteilung der Wärme in den Raum des Dual-Layer-PCBs eingespritzt wird.

Der Dimensity 9400 verfügt außerdem über 100 Prozent mehr L2- und 50 Prozent mehr L3-Cache. Beim L2-Cache handelt es sich um 2 MB für den einzelnen Cortex-X925, 1 MB für jeden Cortex-X4 und 512 KB für jeden Cortex-A720. Der L3-Cache kommt auf 12 MB und zusätzlich stehen dem Design 10 MB SLC zur Verfügung. Den L1-Cache legt MediaTek nicht offen.

Mit der Trinity Engine, die Oppo in Zusammenarbeit mit MediaTek entwickelt hat, soll die Leistungsaufnahme des L3- und SLC-Caches beim Spielen noch einmal um über 8 Prozent und bei der Videowiedergabe um bis zu 4,5 Prozent reduziert worden sein – über die erhöhte Energieeffizienz des Dimensity 9400 hinausgehend.

Für die GPU greift MediaTek zur neuesten Lösungen von Arm. Zum Einsatz kommt die Immortalis-G925 in einer Konfiguration mit 12 Kernen und bis zu 41 Prozent höherer Spitzen- sowie 40 Prozent höherer Raytracing-Leistung bei bis zu 44 Prozent reduziertem Verbrauch im Vergleich zum Vorgänger. Zu den von MediaTek unterstützten attributes zählt unter anderem HyperEngine Super Resolution, das temporales Upscaling auf FSR-2-Basis auf Smartphones bringt. Die Umsetzung von MediaTek basiert auf Arm Accuracy Super Resolution (Arm ASR).

NPU für Video-Generierung und AI-Training.

Wie bei jeder aktuellen Neuvorstellung darf auch AI bei MediaTeks neuem SoC nicht fehlen. Für die NPU der 8. Generation nennt MediaTek keine TOPS, sondern wirbt mit Fähigkeiten und Leistungsdaten. Dazu zählen 50 Tokens/s für Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLM), eine verdoppelte Leistung für Diffusion Models etwa bei der Bildgenerierung und eine 80 Prozent höhere Leistung bei Anfragen an Large Language Models. Der Dimensity 9400 sei der erste Mobile-Chip für LoRA-Training und Video-Generierung direkt auf dem Gerät. Beispiele für die AI-Video-Generierung sind Sora von OpenAI oder das Firefly Video Model von Adobe.

In den Benchmarks trifft das Find X8 Pro mit Dimensity 9400 auf den ebenfalls brandneuen Snapdragon 8 Elite im Asus ROG Phone 9.

Beim WLAN und Bluetooth kann Oppo auf die neuen Fähigkeiten des Dimensity 9400 aufbauen. Dieser bietet einen in 4 nm gefertigten WLAN/BT-Chip, der deutlich effizienter sein soll und bei der Nutzung von Wi-Fi 7 eine Bruttodatenrate von bis zu 7,3 Gbit/s unterstützt. Oppo setzt für schnelles WLAN auf eine Triple-Wi-Fi-7-Antenne mit Antennen an der Ober- und Unterseite und Seite des Smartphones. Im Test offenbarte sich jedoch ein Problem mit der 5G-Verbindung des Oppo Find X8 Pro. Immer wieder wird über 5G die Verbindung komplett verloren, das 5G-Symbol verschwindet und es taucht sogar kurz das Symbol auf, dass gar keine SIM eingesetzt sei. In den Einstellungen wird die SIM dann kurz ausgegraut. Eine Datenübertragung ist nicht möglich und nach kurzer Zeit fällt die Verbindung auf 2G zurück, so dass zwar Daten übertragen werden können, aber sehr langsam. Bis die 5G-Verbindung bei der Nutzung mobiler Daten abbricht, vergeht immer unterschiedlich viel Zeit. Mal ist dies sofort der Fall, mal erst nach mehreren Minuten mobiler Nutzung oder einer Viertelstunde. In den Einstellungen der SIM-Karte kann man den bevorzugten Netzwerktyp auswählen und zwischen 5G/LTE/3G/2G oder LTE/3G/2G wählen.

Ein Wechsel des SIM-Steckplatzes hat keinen Einfluss auf das Verhalten. Im Test wurde das Netz der Deutschen Telekom genutzt. ComputerBase steht mit Oppo in Kontakt, die das Problem nachvollziehen und beseitigen möchten.

Die Kameraerhöhung an der Rückseite misst 3,58 mm. Zum Vergleich, das Oppo Find X7 Ultra misst 164,3 × 76,2 × 9,5 mm und wiegt rund 221 g.

Das Smartphone ist nach IP68 und IP69 zertifiziert, kann also nicht nur für 30 Minuten in 1,5 m Tiefe untergetaucht werden, sondern hält auch einem Hochdruckwasserstrahl bis 80 Grad Celsius stand.

Das Find X8 Pro setzt auf ein dezentes Design mit abgerundeten Kanten am fast geraden Aluminiumrahmen. Neben dem Dreifach-Schalter an der linken Seite für Stumm, Vibrieren und Klingeln ist die Kamerataste an der rechten unteren Seite eine Besonderheit, die auch Apple mit dem iPhone 16 (Pro) eingeführt hat. Über ein Doppeltippen wird über ihn die Kamera geöffnet, erneutes Drücken macht ein Foto und Halten löst eine Burst-Aufnahme aus. Wischt man mit dem Finger über den Button, wird gezoomt. Im Vergleich zum iPhone muss aber mehr gewischt werden, um den gesamten Zoombereich durchzuscrollen. Der Finger muss gegebenenfalls mehrfach angelegt werden, um die gewünschte Zoomstufe zu erreichen. Das hat aber auch den Vorteil, dass es genauer möglich ist. Mit einem Software-improvement kurz nach dem Start möchte Oppo die Funktion des Buttons weiter verbessern, etwa indem man durch zweimaliges Drücken auch direkt ein Foto machen kann, anstatt nur die Kamera zu öffnen.

Dass dazu auch Chips aller Art gehören, ist nicht überraschend, schließlich hatte Trump zuletzt schon mit Zöllen von 25, 50 oder auch 100 Prozent auf Chips aus Taiwan gedroht. JD Vance machte in Paris jetzt klar: Die leistungsstärksten AI-Systeme sollen in den USA gebaut werden – inklusive der in den USA entworfenen und gefertigten Chips.

Mit dem Schlagwort „Halbleiterfertigung in den USA“ wird automatisch Intel ins Spiel gebracht, die Spitzenposition hat der Hersteller aber schon vor Jahren verloren und versuchen nun dort Anschluss zu finden. Dafür gibt es bekanntlich viel Geld vom Staat, in diesem Jahr muss das Unternehmen mit Intel 18A aber Fakten in Form marktreifer und nicht nur konkurrenzfähiger, sondern, wenn möglich den besten Produkten liefern. Doch zwischen Theorie und Praxis klafften bei Intel in den letzten Jahren gern große Lücken.

TSMCs Aktienkurs bewegte sich gestern hingegen kaum. Beim Schwergewicht aus Taiwan überwogen aus US-Perspektive aber schon zuletzt eher positive Meldungen, in kürze soll eine Hauptversammlung (board meeting) erstmals in den USA abgehalten werden.

Gerüchte aus Asien vermelden dazu heute, dass TSMC für die Fabs in Arizona die N3-Fertigung vorziehen und das im Rahmen dieser Versammlung direkt in den USA verkünden könnte. Die Massenproduktion für die zweite Fabrik war vor einem Jahr erst um zwei Jahre nach hinten verschoben worden, 2028 hieß es damals. Nun könnte daraus wieder das Jahr 2027 werden, unterm Strich also nur noch ein Jahr später dran als im Auftaktplan.

Anfang der 2030er Jahre soll dann das dritte Werk stehen, Gerüchte ranken sogar bereits über eine mögliche vierte Einrichtung und einen Packaging-Komplex.
