ARM gives up on trying to withdraw Qualcomm's chip design license

Back in October, ARM sent out a 60-day notice to Qualcomm, informing it that it would be terminating its chip design license. Qualcomm fired back with a lawsuit, which it won in US federal court in December. However, the jury in that case failed to reach a unanimous verdict, opening up Qualcomm to possible future court cases by ARM.

Now it seems like none of that is going to happen, and this was all a very weird storm in a teacup. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon told analysts on a conference call discussing the organization's first quarter results that ARM has now withdrawn its threat to terminate Qualcomm's license agreement. Here are Amon's words:

ARM in the recent past notified us that it was withdrawing its October 22, 2024 notice of breach, and indicated that it has no current plan to terminate the Qualcomm architecture license agreement.

We assume this means the strange licensing war of late 2024 is over, but who knows, ARM could follow up with something else. Only time will tell.

An initial review ruled the spot was ambiguous and misleading, and asked T-Mobile to make changes.

Separately from that, though, Charter Communications filed a complaint with the National Advertising Division (NAD), centered on T-Mobile’s claim that “families can save 20% vs. the other big guys.”.

T-Mobile appealed that decision with the NARB, which rejects NAD’s logic and asserts that the carrier was not misleading viewers. For one, the organization shuts down the somewhat ridiculous assertion that people watching the ad would assume the “big guys” meant anyone other than AT&T and Verizon.

The NARB panel did not stop there, though, and goes on to explain that even if it could be argued that this was actually intended as a comparison with Spectrum, T-Mobile saying families “can” save a certain amount does not constitute a guarantee that all of them necessarily will. Basically: Charter’s complaints don’t have a leg to stand on.

Google app’s built-in browser adds Auto Dark Mode on iPhone

After testing last year, Google app on iOS has rolled out an Auto Dark Mode for its built-in web browser.

The Google app on iPhone opens pages from Search results and the Discover feed in its own browser. There’s an address bar, tab grid system, and convenient “Read Aloud” text-to-speech (TTS) feature.

The latest addition is Auto Dark Mode for websites that have yet to add their own design. Tap the three-dot overflow menu in the top-right corner for “Turn on Auto Dark Mode” at the bottom. It’s persistent and can be easily toggled off.

Google notes that “Quality of sites may vary,” but it’s been in testing since June through Search Labs and the results have been pretty good in our experience. (If you’re already enrolled, manually leave to get the stable experience.).
