Google brings Gboard’s voice typing to the forefront with a dedicated toolbar

It appears as a new toolbar with a microphone button, a backspace key, and buttons to open the keyboard and change language.

The toolbar also hints at voice commands for actions you might want to perform when you stop speaking.

Google has started testing a new Assistant Voice Typing experience for the Gboard app with its latest beta release. The new voice typing UI appears as a toolbar above the keyboard that makes it easier for customers to start and stop voice typing, minimize the keyboard, and view supported voice commands.

The new Assistant Voice Typing UI appears to be rolling out to some beta testers with version [website] of the Gboard app. It’s available on several of our devices and, as you can see in the attached screenshots, Gboard demonstrates a two-page tutorial highlighting how it works.

In the new layout, the Assistant Voice Typing UI appears as a bar at the top of the keyboard. It has a microphone button featuring Google’s colors to the right that you can use to start and stop voice typing. It also has buttons to minimize the keyboard, return to the previous toolbar page, and view supported voice commands.

The space between the four buttons demonstrates a “Speak now” prompt when Assistant Voice Typing is ready and listening for your commands or a “Paused” prompt when you hit the microphone button and stop voice typing. Additionally, the toolbar offers voice command suggestions in this space when voice typing is active and you stop speaking.

When you minimize the keyboard, the toolbar replaces the minimize button with a backspace key and the ‘i’ button with a shortcut to reopen the full keyboard layout. As mentioned earlier, the new Assistant Voice Typing layout is currently available to a few beta testers. It could roll out to more individuals with a future improvement.

Along with the new UI, Google is improving Gboard’s Assistant Voice Typing experience with support for writing tools. We got our first look at the feature in a teardown of the Gboard app earlier today, which revealed six new voice commands that will help you rewrite texts with your voice.

OPPO is gearing up to launch the Find N5, which is being hyped as the world’s thinnest foldable phone. The business previously confirmed that it would get a simultaneous global and Chinese release, and it’s now revealed the launch date along with a video showing off the phone’s design.

OPPO revealed on Twitter that the Find N5 would launch globally on February 20 in Singapore. Check out the accompanying image below, which also exhibits off the ultra-thin design, putting phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold to shame.

The Chinese manufacturer also posted a video on Twitter showing the phone’s design from several angles. The clip confirms an alert slider once again, a triple rear camera setup with Hypertone branding, and what appears to be a side fingerprint scanner. The post notes that the phone will be available in Cosmic Black and Misty White colors for global markets.

OPPO executive Zhou Yibao also posted some images of the Find N5 on Weibo. It turns out Chinese individuals are getting a rather cool Twilight Purple variant with what appears to be a pleather back. Check out the gallery below.

The Chinese manufacturer has already revealed a few details about the upcoming foldable. It’ll arrive with a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, IPX6/X8/X9 water resistance, a titanium alloy hinge, and 50W wireless charging. Leaker Digital Chat Station added today that the phone will have an [website] foldable screen, a triple 50MP rear camera system, and 80W wired charging.

The OPPO Find N5 was widely expected to launch in global markets as the OnePlus Open 2. But it appears the enterprise will stick with the original name for now outside China. The shortcut uses a simple calculation based on the current battery level. While not perfect, it offers a glanceable workaround since iOS lacks this feature natively.

Android and iOS have largely reached maturity, so both operating systems turn to each other for inspiration on what to do next. Apple looked at Android for home screen customization aspects that arrived in iOS 18, and Google looked at iOS for the Live Updates feature arriving with Android 16. Surprisingly, iPhone consumers are still missing one feature Android phones have had for a while: the time their phone will take for a full charge. It’s annoying that this is still missing from iPhones, so a user built their own rudimentary solution with the Shortcuts app.

Reddit user AlxR25 built a basic “estimated charging time” notification for iPhones using the Shortcuts app. This shortcut essentially subtracts the current battery level from 100, divides the result by [website], rounds it up, and displays the value as the number of minutes needed for a full charge.

You can download the shortcut from the iCloud sharing link to set it up on your device. You will need to swap the “1,5” to “[website]” within the Shortcut to match the decimal system for your locale, or you can download this shortcut that I’ve already edited.

With the shortcut created, the user has also set an automation that runs the shortcut every time you connect your iPhone with a charger, so you get an estimated charging time right when you plug in.

How did the user arrive at the “[website]” number for division? In the comments, the user mentions that they noticed that their iPhone 15 charges 1% every [website] minutes with Apple’s 20W charger in the 0-50% range and 1% every [website] minutes in the 50-100% range, so the user settled on the middle [website] as their number.

Yes, this is pretty unscientific, rudimentary, and consequently incorrect. The battery charging time estimate has variables like the user’s phone, charger, ambient temperature, the iPhone’s temperature at the time of charge, any applicable battery limits, the battery’s health, and any adaptive charging functions that may be active. All of these affect the time it would take for the iPhone to charge, so a static number doesn’t do justice.

The time taken for the last 10% also differs from ranges like 70-80% and 80-90%, as the charging keeps slowing down the closer you are to 100%. So, how many more minutes will the iPhone actually take to charge? It’s tough to nail it down as a user!

That being mentioned, the fact that iOS still doesn’t have a reliable charging time estimate is mind-boggling. This feature has been around on Android skins for a while — my Pixel 9 Pro XL gives me a good estimate of when I can expect a fully charged phone right on the lock screen.

If the Android phone doesn’t have a charging time estimate, it will at least give you an indication of whether your phone is fast charging or slow charging on the lock screen. iPhones don’t even do that, and you have to go into Settings > Battery to know if you are fast charging or slow charging.

There’s also no “charging full” notification on iPhones. I’ve resorted to creating my own Shortcuts notification that buzzes my Apple Watch when my iPhone 16 Pro reaches 100% charging.

All in all, there’s plenty of room for iOS to improve its ability to tell consumers their charging status, and I hope they look at Android for inspiration. Until then, you can use this shortcut for a rough estimate.
