Magic: The Gathering is being turned into a live-action movie as the beginning of 'a multimedia universe'

Hasbro has introduced that it's partnering with Legendary Entertainment to make a live-action Magic: The Gathering movie, followed by a TV show, as a way of kicking off one of those cinematic universes everybody loves. (Via Nerdist.).

Legendary Entertainment has co-produced movies like Batman Begins, Warcraft, and A Minecraft Movie, as well as TV demonstrates like The Expanse and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. Mary Parent, chairman of worldwide production at Legendary, introduced, "We pride ourselves on being thoughtful stewards of singular, beloved IP, and no property advanced fits that description than Magic: The Gathering. Alongside the fantastic Hasbro team, we look forward to creating a multimedia universe that thrills longstanding fans and creates a broad wave of new ones."

Previously, Netflix unveiled an animated series based on Magic: The Gathering was in the works, and as of September last year it still is. Are the two connected, or will we have dueling Magic: The Gathering universes on our hands? I have no idea.

No release date was mentioned so this is another "long way off" kind of deal, and assuming it survives development hell, it'll be ages before we can go to a cinema and see, I dunno, Idris Elba as Teferi and Scarlet Johansson as Chandra and Chris Hemsworth as Ajani Goldmane with, inevitably, Jack Black as Fblthp.

Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment unveiled in a joint news release on Thursday that they have reached a deal licensing Magic: The Gathering to Legendary for development into “a live-action feature film and television universe,” starting with an initial planned movie, then expanding to other media. Legendary is the studio behind IP-derived movies like Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Dune: Part Two, and a recent run of Godzilla and King Kong movies, including Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

There were no initial details about what area of Magic the studio might want to explore, or who would be involved with the production. The initial news release just promised “a multimedia universe that thrills longstanding fans and creates a broad wave of new ones.” But looking at Legendary’s other output — Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and Inception, the 2016 Warcraft movie, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and Watchmen, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, and a lot more — at least points to the specific dark, somber tone and blockbuster scope that the business might bring to the material.

The news release notes that Hasbro has also licensed Magic: The Gathering to Netflix for the previously reported (and lately revived) upcoming animated TV series, which hints at this new deal hasn’t canceled or overwritten the old one. Presumably, Legendary’s planned Magic universe won’t intersect with Netflix’s version at all.

Space Marine 2’s main campaign can be polished off in a few hours, but Saber Interactive has continued to enhancement the game with new operations and multiplayer capabilities. On Thursday, Saber unveiled the third major content enhancement for the game. Dubbed Datavault, the patch adds a new chamber to the battle barge, lots of new cosmetics, a new PvP map, and the terrifying Tyranid Biovore.

In Space Marine 2, the player can either serve as Commander Titus for the main story, or they can take part in ancillary Operations. These missions are not critical to the main campaign, but they take place around the story, explaining how certain military maneuvers were pulled off. While queueing for Operations or the game’s PvP mode, they can hang out on the Ultramarine battle barge. Now, the battle barge has the titular Datavault, a chamber where Tech-Priests catalogue data on the game’s enemies. Players can compete challenges to earn that data, which accumulates a research data currency that can be turned into sweet, sweet power armor pieces and weapon skins.

With the Datavault revision, Operations can now include the monstrous Biovore. This Tyranid unit is a particularly cool model from the tabletop with crab-like legs and a massive organic cannon mounted on its chitinous back. PvP players can also enjoy a new map, which is themed like a Necron tomb.
