7 things to do first in Monster Hunter Wilds

It can be hard knowing where to start with Monster Hunter Wilds . Though undoubtedly streamlined in comparison to previous installments, this is still a Monster Hunter game, which means all sorts of systems to contend with. Even for series veterans, a good number of mechanics no longer work the same way, so no matter who you are there's stuff to learn.
Monster Hunter can be especially brutal for those who've never tried it before. So here I'll do my best to lay out some early priorities. These will help you get started hunting but also come to grasp a lot of the systems you'll be expected to interact with on your path to becoming a veteran hunter.
Check your weapon's controls guide and head to the training area.
Whether you're an experienced weapon main or are picking one up for the first time. It's well worth checking out the in-game controls guide for your weapon. To find this:
Cycle across to the Info section—three tabs along.
Choose the Weapon Controls option third down.
Additionally, this useful source of info will lay out all weapon attacks and combos and. Also gives a little explanation of essential terms on the second page that will help you understand how the weapon works. Since there are new weapon attacks in Wilds, even if you knew your stuff in World and Rise. You should definitely take some time to see what's changed.
If you want to experiment, you can also head to the Training Area in the Windward Plains Base Camp. This unlocks as part of the story, but it'll give you a place to work on your combos and get them straight in your head, in case you don't want to do that while fighting actual monsters.
Pick up your pre-order DLC and beta rewards from the Support Palico.
Once the Windward Plains Base Camp is operational, you'll be able to speak to the Support Desk Palico. Conut, and collect your beta reward items if you played. Simply interact with them and choose the Claim Content option for a list of your rewards. This is the same for any pre-order DLC. Unless you buy a lot of DLC, this is likely one of the few times you'll talk to Conut, but remember that you can also manage your Pop-up Camps here once that mechanic unlocks, so it might be worth checking back then.
Collect rations from the Ingredient Centre and. Cook yourself some steaks.
Another feature of the Windward Plains Base Camp that unlocks once it's up and running is the Ingredient Centre. Sadly, Felynes will no longer cook for you in Wilds, but they still provide you with plenty of ingredients so you can make food yourself. Speak to Tom at the Ingredient Center and he'll give you a regular shipment of rations you can consume or cook into pre-hunt meals in your tent, or using the Portable BBQ Grill.
It's also worth grabbing some raw meat—your best bet is by hunting the Ceratonoth and. Dalthydon small monsters you'll find on the plains just outside camp. Once you have raw meat, you can equip your Portable BBQ Grill by cycling along your item bar at the bottom and cook some steaks—remember to time your input during the cooking minigame if you want Well Done Steaks.
Building on these developments, these hunks of meat are a little different from rations and will increase your health and stamina when the duration of your previous meal has expired, so it's good to have a few on hand in case of a rumbly tummy emergency.
Slay small monsters and. Get the Bulaqchi Specs.
When I get to a new region in Monster Hunter, the first thing I do is hunt and harvest every small monster in the area. Why? They're easy to forget about, but they often have their own unique armour sets and provide materials and skills you can't get elsewhere. In the Windward Plains, you should hunt down Talioth to unlock the Talioth Bracers, Vespoid for the Vespoid set, and. Finally, Bulaqchi for the Bulaqchi Specs. You can see which monsters are which by hovering over the small pink icons on the map.
The Bulaqchi is especially useful to hunt since the specs give you the Entomologist skill that stops small insect monsters being destroyed when you attack. Allowing you to carve them. I consider it a must-have skill if you're hunting Vespoids for materials or farming Nerscylla Hatchlings for Monster Fluid, so don't neglect it.
Grab Wiggly Litchi and. Build yourself a material stockpile.
Additionally, there's lots of useful endemic life to grab in Wilds—by which I mean small creatures that give you something when you snatch them with your hookclaw. Vigorwasps restore health, Purewasps remove status effects, Heatmantle Bugs warm you in cold areas, and Coldmantle Bugs cool you in hot areas. There are all sorts to mess around with, but the one that is universally beneficial is the Wiggly Litchi.
Moving to another aspect, this white worm buffs your stamina regen. Which is never not useful during a hunt. Basically grab this little creature whenever you spot it nestled on a wall. While we're on the subject of grabbing, you should also grab…well, just about everything. Since you can use your Hook Slinger to yoink stuff while your Seikret is auto-travelling, it's worth building a stockpile of crafting items.
Materials like honey, herbs, and blue mushrooms are never not useful, and. Special items give you guild points, which you can use later to change time in your tent, or buy items and weapons from the Support Ship once in high rank. Also make sure to turn on auto-craft in your crafting menu for any vital items like mega potions, potions, and. Antidotes.
Get in the habit of checking the Monster Field Guide.
Building on these developments, this is another mechanic you'll be introduced to via the main story and will likely forget almost immediately after. Word to the wise: don't. This is the single most useful tool in all of Monster Hunter and yet people seem to forget it exists constantly. The Monster Field Guide tells you:
Each monster's precise weaknesses, whether elemental or status effect.
Where best to attack with your weapon based on damage type, slashing, bludgeoning, shot.
How to get every single material the monster drops as well as % chances.
It's such a handy resource and one you should remember exists when you can't work out where to get a monster material. Or you're struggling to beat one in battle.
As you progress through Wilds, Gemma the smithy will periodically give you new mantles to use—effectively capes you can temporarily equip for a special buff. The first one you'll get is the Ghillie Mantle, which lets you sneak around. It's easy to forget about these since they represent an extra layer you don't really have to engage with when hunting.
Still, if you want an advantage in early hunts, and. A boon in later ones, I'd recommend experimenting with the Ghillie Mantle. If you hold the left bumper on controller and press down on the D-pad. You can use your right stick to select the Ghillie Mantle from the bottom of the Essential Items hotwheel. Now simply walk up behind a monster before you start a hunt and interact where it says Sneak Attack for some big extra damage.

7 things we wish we knew before playing Monster Hunter Wilds

Merry Monster Hunter Wilds day to all those who celebrate. Capcom's dino-basher has been going from strength to strength since Worlds became a breakout hit back in 2018, and. Wilds doubles down on that open world monster-mashing experience with style. It's a great time to start playing Monster Hunter if you're new to the series, and we've got a whole Monster Hunter Wilds walkthrough to help you every step of the way through the main campaign.
However, despite Capcom's best efforts to streamline its barrage of systems and complex web of interlocking stat boosts. Weapon buffs and goodness knows what else, there's still plenty of stuff that Wilds doesn't tell you from the outset. It may be the friendliest and easiest Monster Hunter to get into in, well, ever, but to help make your journey even smoother, we've put together some extra handy starter tips to help give you a leg up into this brilliant action RPG - stuff we wish we knew before we started playing Wilds for the first time, and stuff we hope you'll want to know before you dive in. Too.
Take the time to experiment with different weapons - don't just accept the Great Sword.
During the opening monster chase, you'll be handed an enormous Great Sword as your first weapon. But be warned. While the Great Sword is one of the best Monster Hunter Wilds weapons, it's not necessarily the easiest one to master early on due to its slow wind-ups and. Excessive heft. It's a heavy, sluggish weapon, and can make fights more difficult if you're not used to it.
Instead, before you carry on with the story mission. Take the time to experiment with all 14 weapon types by speaking to Alma. Once you've equipped a weapon, practice attacking the barrels to the side of the spring where you're resting.
For beginners, I'd recommend a lighter kind of blade weapon - the traditional sword and shield is a great starter weapon and lets you play Monster Hunter like a more traditional action adventure game. But I'd also recommend having a go with the Dual Blades. This is my particular weapon of choice, and I love how fast and nippy they are - and how powerful and. Cool its Demon Mode attacks are, too. Try it - you might be surprised. And as for those who prefer ranged attacks, the regular bow is another great option to try your hand at. Once you've found a weapon you like, feel free to continue with the mission. You can always swap weapons and try even more new ones when you're back at base camp.
Don't forget to raid your Seikret's supply items for free stuff.
If you find yourself running low on health and stamina items. Don't forget that your Seikret is basically a walking med kit in disguise thanks to its bundle of free supply items that get dumped there at the start of every mission. Wilds doesn't do a great job of flagging this up when you head out on missions, but if you press left on the d-pad while mounted on your Seikret, you can open up its Supply Item menu for free first aid kits and rations. Among other items.
It's well worth transferring all of these supply items over to your main item pouch at the start of a mission, as it's basically just loads of free stuff that will help you out later on. If you leave them on your Seikret, they'll disappear at the end of the mission, so make sure to grab them while you can. Waste not, want not, right?
Customise your radial menus for a wider variety of healing items.
Furthermore, the new crop of radial item menus in Monster Hunter Wilds make it easier than ever before to get the right item you need for any given situation. The default Action wheel is particularly handy for flagging up appropriate healing items, and. 90 per cent of the time it will give you exactly the thing you're looking for straight away. Poisoned? Here's an Antidote. In need of more health? Here's a herb.
Learn how to pause the game when you're in a pinch.
On a similar note, I was 12 hours into the game before I learned I could pause Monster Hunter Wilds from the radial menu - which is exceedingly handy if you need to stop the action for a minute. Like Elden Ring, you'll probably notice quite quickly that opening up Monster Hunter Wilds' main menu doesn't actually pause the game at all - the action continues to run away in the background, and. Leaves you exceedingly vulnerable in the meantime. The main menu does, technically, have a pause function in it, if you somehow manage to navigate to the System tab and hit Pause there, but the easiest thing to do is stick it right on one of your radial menus, so it's much easier to reach when you need it.
To do this, go to Customise Radial Menu in the Items & Equipment tab of the main menu, select the radial menu you want to add it to. Select where you want to put it on the radial menu, then press left trigger to get to the Other tab, and you'll see Pause right near the bottom of available options. Trust me, you won't regret this one.
Always grill a meal before heading out on a hunt.
Previous Monster Hunter games have always made a big deal about eating some food before you head out on hunts. Sadly, Wilds doesn't have its equivalent Meowster Chef, or dedicated canteen area in your various camps, to help hammer this point home, but eating a meal before heading out on missions is still just as crucial as ever, so don't forget to chow down before continuing with the story.
To grill yourself a meal in your base camp. You'll need to head to your tent and do it through the menus. Alternatively, if it slips your mind and you suddenly need a pick-me-up out on the field, never fear. Rather than fast travel back to base camp, whip out your portable BBQ. Previously, you could only use this to grill stamina-restoring meat cuts (provided you had some raw meat on you to begin with, that is), but now you can do that and. Grill more substantial meals that can boost your health, stamina and attack power depending on the ingredients you use. It's exceedingly handy, and the fact you can do this anywhere, anytime, means there's now no excuse not to stuff your face before a big fight.
Use waypoints and your Seikret's auto-run to easily get around.
Your Seikret's auto-run is both a blessing and. A curse. A blessing, in that it will automatically take you towards your target so you can concentrate on more essential things like sharpening your weapon with a whetstone, switching weapons, using your slinger to nab essential crafting materials without disrupting the flow of your journey, and generally taking in the sights and sounds of the area without worrying too much about where you're going.
Pay attention to your armour's equipment skills to maximise buffs and elemental resistances.
Crafting armour is an integral part of the Monster Hunter experience. And every time you return from a hunt, you should head straight to Gemma to see what new bits and pieces you can make. You'll usually always be able to craft some part of a new armour set after taking down a monster for the first time, and constantly updating your wardrobe is a great way to raise your defence and elemental resistances for taking on bigger and. Badder beasts later on.
But savvy hunters can take advantage of some quite key passive skills and buffs early on if they pay attention to the equipment skills menu. There's a lot of information thrown at you when crafting new armour. With tons of valuable information hidden away in sub-tabs you might not notice on the crafting screen. But if you use your controller's trigger buttons to navigate left and right through the Skills tabs, you'll see each piece of armour's respective equipment skills. And how they stack with everything else you've currently got equipped. If you want to reduce your stamina depletion when evading or blocking, for example, focus on crafting items with the Constitution equipment skill, as the more pieces of armour you have equipped with this skill. The more that skill will level up and increase its effect.
You can also gain valuable bonuses from equipping armour belonging to the same set. These are listed as Set Bonus Skills below the Equipment Info tab, and you can often get an initial bonus from wearing two armour pieces from the same set. Which then gets advanced if you equip four from the same set. Others, meanwhile, will give you a group bonus if you're wearing three pieces from the same set. They're worth paying attention to as you get further into the game, as sometimes raw defence just isn't enough to help you overcome the monster at hand.

I became a domestic terrorist to steal a lightbulb in the best immersive sim I've played this Steam Next Fest—and it isn't even a Next Fest demo

Looking back, we'll call this period a renaissance for games that are kind of a pain in the ass. Stalker 2, Kingdom Come, Atomfall on the horizon—the gaming public of 2025 wants nothing more than to die face-down in the mud, victims to clockworld worlds that have their own rules and obey them unsparingly.
I couldn't be happier, and in my Next Fest meandering I think I might have found the true king of the genre: Peripeteia, a cyberpunk immersive sim set in an alt-reality Poland. Whose developers were brave enough to ask the question: 'What if Jucika had a gun?' Its demo is also, well, not actually part of Next Fest, though I can't recommend strongly enough that you try it anyway. The game hit early access last week, and I'm eager to see where it goes.
Peripeteia feels a little like the beautiful mutant hybrid of Stalker and Deus Ex: things kick off with you—Marie—prone and unconscious on the floor of a warehouse. Memories gone but your body bristling with mechanical augmentations. This is a videogame, so you have no memory, but the guy outside isn't much help: he's mostly upset he can't harvest you for parts.
And then, well. Do what you like, really. Peripeteia's environments feel cavernous in a way you don't really see since the glory days of Unreal Engine 1. Everywhere is wide and vertiginous, bathed in sickly green light, and gas-masked troopers wield old Mosins and AKs in their spiky mechanical hands. Also, there's a TV in the bar you start off near that just plays the National Anthem of the USSR on loop, so that's great.
You're left to your own devices. But the guy who's upset he can't steal your legs—Filemon—does nudge you in a direction. He offers you an extra augment and gun of your choice and asks you to steal a bulb from the local planetarium. This is the hardest thing you will ever have to do in your actual life.
Because it's not just a simple matter of walking down the road. Peripeteian Poland is like a magical Chongqing: you are constantly exiting buildings only to realise you've been on the 20th, 30th, 40th floor this whole time. Or that you're actually underground, or that ground floor is just a state of mind, man. Reaching the Planetarium means traversing across rooftops and balconies that are not arranged in that classic, game-designy way. They do not call attention to themselves. Getting anywhere is a question of eyeballing something that might be a platform, or a ladder, and. Deciding to give it a punt.
Which is, unironically, great fun if you're of a certain mental bent. Also, I died multiple times just trying to reach my destination (the game notes in your quest log that there are alternate paths, but that the one that murdered me repeatedly is the "easiest").

Anyway. Once I got there I had to bomb a government building. Naturally. The planetarium was inhabited by a cabal of subculturalists, a gang whose ideology I didn't quite take the time to parse but. Who were really not keen on the neighbouring government building. If I wanted to get in and filch their bulb, I had to drop a bomb behind the reception at city hall.
I played it cool, sweeping in with my guns holstered and augs switched off. Taking the time to browse the literature on the tables—a phrenological treatise on Lenin's biological inferiority, which, okay—before leaping the reception desk. Anyway, long story short I got gunned down for my hubris, and resolved to instead find an alternate means of ingress to the planetarium, sneaking by the Subculturalists rather than getting involved in politics.
It all felt great, and. Had the freestyle jazz, I'm-just-making-this-up-as-I-go-along feel of the great imsims of old. Given that this is just the early access version, I'm very curious to see what the devs at Ninth Exodus do with the game as time goes on. But if you want to get your hands on it now, you could do a lot worse with your time than checking out its demo.
