If you noticed an odd bug in Destiny 2 in recent times, don't worry about it, because Bungie isn't fixing it on purpose.

There are lots of things that separate games from other mediums out there, but I think one of the biggest are bugs and glitches. The closest thing you could maybe find elsewhere is in live theatre, because accidents can happen, but it's not exactly the same given the way games work. Sometimes, little bugs can find their way into games and just get embraced by the devs, like how in Celeste players discovered certain walls of spikes had single-pixel-wide windows you could dash through, and the devs added in a custom animation to show you're doing the trick right. It's neat! And while Bungie isn't going quite that far with Destiny 2's latest bug, it is still embracing it.

In recent weeks following Heresy's launch, some players noticed that three exotic glaive weapons, the Edge of Intent, the Edge of Concurrence, and the Edge of Action, amongst others, which were typically class-specific could be used on any class. And, as it turns out, Bungie has been "seeing some great celebrations with the removal of these constraints," as it explained in a blog post last week.

"Our first reactions were focused more towards fixing the issue as we want to retain strong class-based fantasies within Destiny, and the removal of class locks muddies the water a bit," Bungie continued. "As an example, it's a bit weird to see a Warlock or a Hunter spawning a mini-bubble or seeing a Titan running like a ninja. After some discussions between team members, we've arrived at a new decision: we're going to let this ride. A fun example of a bug becoming a feature."

Now, one thing Bungie did want to note is that some animations might not look right given that certain combos aren't meant to happen. On top of that it found from talking amongst the team, "class-based Glaives open up some interesting new buildcrafting opportunities. In the future, we will be keeping a close eye on how these Glaives are performing across all three classes."

Bungie did also make it clear that it "won't always look at weird bugs and decide to support them as a feature," but this one "felt appropriate", so don't pointlessly hope that it'll keep the next weird bug that rolls around (even though you probably will).

Obsidian's latest RPG Avowed just launched this week, and it sounds like its director is already thinking about what's next for the new RPG.

It's been less than a week since Avowed, Obsidian's latest RPG that everyone refers to as its Skyrim even though the two aren't really that similar at all, was released unto the world, and so far it's received pretty favourable, albeit not unanimously praising reviews. Honestly, a game not being universally praised interests me more than 5/5s across the board, and I'll always trust what our own Alex says, who gave it 5/5 stars in his review, even calling it the next great cult classic. But the world moves fast these days, and IP is king, so of course the question is, what comes next? The game's director, Carrie Patel, didn't give an exact answer in a recent interview with Bloomberg, but she did suggest she's thinking about where Avowed could go next.

"Now that we've built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I'd love to see us do more with it," Patel shared. Neither the interview itself or Patel makes it particularly clear as to whether more could be some kind of DLC, or a flat out sequel. Obsidian obviously isn't opposed to the idea of sequels, given that it currently has one in the works for The Outer Worlds, which is supposedly set to come out sometime this year (we'll see about that though).

Patel also shared that development, you probably won't be surprised to hear, was not easy on the game, with the game getting rebooted a few years into development, leaving the team to figure out how to put the pieces back together. "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction, putting together a new vertical slice and revised production plans, you would do that with a very small team," Patel mentioned. "We did not have a very small team at that point."

Sometimes to chill out I watch timelapse videos of ocean creatures such as starfish colonising patches of sea floor. Perhaps they're gracefully devouring a seal's carcass, or moving to escape a lethal descending finger of ice. Look, I'm quite a morbid guy, but 'beauty of nature' and all that.

It turns out there's an equivalent in Warhorse's recent RPG-palooza Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2: drop dozens of items in a random town square, and passing NPCs will gradually gather them all up . Here's a video showing that in action, created by Redditor Mcloganator, with three thousand groschen worth of goods to harvest.

Hypnotic, yes? We could do with this kind of thing in Bethesda games. The Reddit video has now been circulated on the Xeetbox, and Warhorse programmer and open world scripter Patrik Papšo has chimed in with some thoughts about the social systems powering such wholesome feats of litter collection.

"Haha, that's an NPC behaviour I made!" he wrote. "They choose what they pick based on the value of the item and their social status. That's why nobles might ignore cheap items, but beggars will pick them up." Under the game's node-based AI system, Papšo explained in a subsequent tweet, when an NPC sees an object dropped by a player, the system checks its price against the NPC's own "social multiplier", then checks to see if another NPC is already picking it up.

Papšo also has some insights in that tweet thread about roads-not-taken. For example, Warhorse once had a system whereby if you dropped a stolen item, the original owner might spot it and trace the theft back to you. The developers cut this feature, however, because it was too difficult for players discarding dozens of items to make the connection between a particular item and suddenly being accused of a crime. There was also once a bug whereby if an NPC "reserved" an object for collection and the player picked it up first, they might filch it from your inventory instead.

The soothing, glacial spectacle of Kuttenberg townsfolk swarming a heap of worn-out gambesons aside, I like all this because I can imagine a game where NPCs actively acquire, exchange or discard objects, and you entertain yourself simply following an object's passage from hand to hand. Imagine somebody nicking your favourite boots early on, and flogging them over the black market. A few dozen hours later, you spy somebody else innocently wearing them while traversing a mountain pass.

There's probably a simulation that does this? Right now, I can think only of how dwarves claim items for their own use in Dwarf Fortress.
