Eve unleashes its first smart dimmer switch, complete with Matter

From weather stations and smart plugs to contact sensors and light switches, smart home manufacturer Eve Systems has had its fingers in a wide range of device categories, which is why we were surprised that its latest product is a first for the enterprise.

Slated to ship next month, the Eve Dimmer Switch marks a new category for the HomeKit pioneer, which has not long ago been making a full-court press into Matter connectivity.

The $[website] dimmer switch boasts a hybrid touch button/rocker design, allowing for precise and “flicker-free” control of dimmable light data, Eve says.

The Eve Dimmer Switch can operate as either a single-pole or a three-way switch. While it does require the presence of a neutral wire in the box it’s installed in, it does not depend on a companion switch or switches being installed on the other legs of the circuit controlling the load in a three-way scenario. If you’re unfamiliar or uncomfortable dealing with home wiring, consult a licensed electrician to install it.

Once it’s in place, the Eve Dimmer Switch can work with Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and other platforms compatible with the Matter standard.

The switch can control your lights via voice commands, the Eve app, or your Matter controller app of choice (the Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home apps will also work, for example), and you can also set schedules and automations for the switch.

Even improved, the Eve Dimmer Switch works locally, without reliance on the cloud. That means schedules and automations are stored and run on the device itself, perfect for keeping your lights on their routines during internet outages.

Because the Eve Dimmer Switch connects via Matter over Thread, you’ll need a smart home hub on your home Wi-Fi network that acts as a Thread border router.

Luckily, there’s good chance you already have a compatible hub in your home, with devices such as the Apple TV 4K (2nd and 3rd gen), the HomePod (2nd gen) and HomePod mini, several Amazon Echo smart speaker and Eero Wi-Fi router models, the Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max, the Nest Wifi and Wifi Pro, and the Samsung SmartThings Hub v3 and Station all offering Thread border router functionality.

While Eve has long had a paddle-style light switch in its product lineup (the enterprise released a Matter-enabled version last September), the Eve Dimmer Switch marks the first time the manufacturer has ventured into dimmer-switch territory.

Eve is also known for its Eve Energy smart plugs, the Eve Weather station, the Eve Door and Window contact sensor, and the Eve Water Guard water-leak detector, among other products.

Until not long ago, most of Eve’s devices only worked with Apple HomeKit, but that all changed with the arrival of Matter, the new protocol that promises to unite the big smart-home platforms.

Late last year, Eve finally made good on its promise to release a native app for Android clients.

The best Star Wars show is back: Andor season 2 trailer drops ahead of April 22 premiere

Editor's take: Andor, the best Star Wars TV show ever – and one of the best exhibits of any genre – is coming back for a second season on April 22, 2025. To build excitement for the gang's return, the first trailer has just dropped.

The multi award-winning Andor has rightly been hailed as standing head and shoulders above the other Star Wars universe TV projects. Even those who know nothing about or dislike the franchise George Lucas created are enjoying the show's brilliant writing, story, and characters.

The first season of Andor was set across a single year, often with big time jumps between episodes. Season 2 has an interesting premise: it is set over four years, with one year taking place across every three episodes – and Disney will be releasing three episodes every week. This time period will lead up to the events of the Rogue One movie.

#Andor S2 will release 3 episodes each week.

The season spans 4 years, with a year passing after every 3 episodes [website] – Culture Crave 🍿 (@CultureCrave) February 24, 2025.

Andor season 2 sees Diego Luna's Cassian Andor return along with favorites such as Stellan Skarsgard's Luthen Rael, Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Mothma, and Forest Whitaker's Saw Gerrera.

As shown in the trailer, Rogue One's Orson Krennic, played by Ben Mendelsohn, is joining the show as he oversees the construction of the Death Star. Another Rogue One character making an appearance in Andor is K-2SO, the sardonic droid voiced by Alan Tudyk.

, season 2 follows the story of Cassian Andor and the emerging rebel alliance over the climactic years that lead to the discovery of the Death Star.

Disney could use another Star Wars hit right now. The Acolyte was hated by viewers, though critics were more forgiving, and was canceled after just one season. And while Skeleton Crew has a high critic and audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, its two-episode debut attracted the lowest number of viewer minutes for any Star Wars premier on Disney+, meaning a second season seems unlikely.

In other Rogue One news, there was a story last year about Disney facing a lawsuit over the 2016 movie using CGI to bring horror legend Peter Cushing back to virtual life as Grand Moff Tarkin.

The iPhone 17 is rumored to go big on video recording features, but it can't replace pro cameras yet –here's why

Apple is reportedly targeting vloggers with the iPhone 17 series.

It may replace a dedicated digital camera for video creators.

For now, it's not clear what any potential video upgrades could be.

We're gradually learning more and more about what Apple has in store for us with the iPhone 17 later this year, and a new study points to the four phones are going to have a special focus on video recording capabilities.

Gurman is one of the more reliable Apple tipsters in the business, and he says Apple is targeting the "vlogging community" and "video creators" to move away from standalone cameras and use their iPhones instead.

It's not clear if there will be any new video recording aspects, or exactly what they might be, but it sounds like Apple is going to hype up these particular capabilities when it comes to iPhone 17 launch day (most probably sometime in September).

The current top-end iPhones, the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, can record video at a maximum resolution of 4K, and at up to 120 frames per second. Multi-stream ProRes and 3D spatial video recording are supported as well.

If Apple is going to introduce new video aspects on the iPhone 17, what could they be? And will they offer enough to get vloggers to leave their dedicated digital cameras behind and go all-in on the iPhone?

A boost in megapixels is expected, as is a new telephoto sensor. On the hardware side, improved audio and video capture would certainly appeal, as would a boost to optical video stabilization for those smooth, extended shots.

There are likely to be improvements on the software and AI side too – perhaps something to match the Pixel's Audio Magic Eraser that cuts out background noise and can identify different types of sound (like singing or the hum of traffic).

Yet even if the iPhone 17 does get these capabilities, it won't completely replace the best vlogging cameras. TechRadar Cameras editor Tim Coleman says: "If a future iPhone 17 Pro is to be taken seriously by aspiring and pro filmmakers, Apple has its work cut out because we'd need to see several hardware improvements equating to the biggest single camera upgrade we've seen yet" he stated.

"These include the quality of lenses, and for vloggers especially a dramatic improvement in the quality of the selfie camera. A built-in ND filter together with some sort of pro mode in the native camera app offering manual exposure control, including aperture and shutter speed, will make footage feel more natural and premium. I'd also hope for superior heat dissipation, battery life, and larger SSD storage, although there are accessories to boost battery life and storage, so those points aren't dealbreakers" he added.

Whatever happens, dedicated pro video cameras are likely to be around for a long time yet. "Today's vlogging cameras have evolved to keep them ahead of the best smartphones, like the iPhone 16 Pro. The DJI Osmo Pocket 3, for example, has a built-in gimbal for stabilization and smoothly following the subject" our cameras editor notes.

"The likes of the Panasonic GH7 and Sony ZV-E1, meanwhile, have much bigger sensors than iPhones and a wealth of pro-friendly recording modes. iPhones have made great strides with video, but there will be a place for standalone video cameras for a while yet" he added.

Still, while the iPhone 17 series won't be a primary camera for many filmmakers, it could well bring pro-friendly elements to a new audience – and we're looking forward to finding out what those rumored elements are later this year.
