Google Calendar is finally correcting this shared calendar oversight

Google Calendar is finally correcting this shared calendar oversight

customers with “Make changes to events” permissions will now be able to see all the people a calendar is shared with.

A good calendar app will help you keep track of all that’s going on in your life, but they get really powerful when we start linking up our own schedules up with those of friends, family, and colleagues. Google Calendar already offers plenty of tools for creating and working with shared events, and today we’re hearing about a small but easy to appreciate improvement that’s looking to remove a little ambiguity from that process.

The issue Google’s looking to address concerns a small oversight in how Calendar grants permissions to perform actions, versus the rights Calendar provides to see information about other consumers. So far, anyone with the “Make changes to events” permission has been able to create new events on shared calendars, but when they did so, they wouldn’t know the identities of everyone else who could now see this event — all the other people that same calendar might have been shared with.

Even if you’re not formally adding all those people as participants, it’s not crazy to think that you might be interested in at least being aware of everyone who’s now privy to your event details. Google is apparently very sympathetic to such concerns, so from here on out, anyone with a “Make changes to events” permission will be able to see everyone else whom a given calendar is also shared with.

In addition to “Make changes to events,” Calendar also supports three other sharing permissions: “See only free/busy (hide details)” which exhibits blocks of time you’re unavailable, but doesn’t disclose what you’re doing or where, “See all event details” which fills in those blanks but doesn’t allow people to change details or create new events, and “Make changes and manage sharing” which adds the admin abilities of changing other individuals’ share settings and fully deleting a calendar.

Google says it may take up to two weeks to see this change hit your account, so keep an eye on your shared calendars for this improvement to go live.

Microsoft has a sneaky new strategy for keeping you on Edge and away from Chrome

The pop-up encourages you to “Enjoy your favorite extensions without switching browsers.”.

This pop-up appears to be Microsoft’s latest tactic to discourage the use of Chrome.

Microsoft has a long history of trying to nudge clients to use its products and only its products. This is especially the case when it comes to Edge’s battle against Chrome, which has included tactics like prompting you to reconsider if you try to download the Chrome browser. Microsoft’s latest strategy to deter you from switching is a new pop-up that’s appearing in Bing.

This pop-up seems to only appear if you’re using Bing in the Edge browser. You won’t see this banner if you use Bing on any other browser like Chrome or Firefox.

You can’t really blame Microsoft for wanting individuals to stay within its ecosystem. In fact, Google has similarly tried to nudge individuals toward Chrome when its services are used in other browsers. However, Microsoft’s tactics often seem more aggressive than others. At least this ad is only appearing on Edge when using Bing.

Google Photos now has a foolproof way to watermark AI-edited images

Google Photos now has a foolproof way to watermark AI-edited images

It will use Google DeepMind’s SynthID tech to label edited images.

individuals will be able to view the SynthID watermark using the “About this image” feature in Search or Chrome.

Magic Editor on the Pixel 9 series offers a useful AI-powered editing feature that essentially lets you recreate sections of an image using a descriptive prompt. You can use the Reimagine tool to select parts of a photo and either add or subtract elements by describing what you want to see in the final image. It’s an easy way for individuals to make stellar edits without professional know-how, and the resulting images can look pretty realistic.

Since the tool lets you recreate large parts of an image, Google wants to ensure that others can easily tell that the resulting image is AI-generated. To that end, the business plans to use SynthID to mark images edited using Reimagine in Magic Editor starting this week.

For the unaware, SynthID is a technology from Google’s DeepMind division capable of identifying and watermarking AI-generated content. It embeds digital watermarks into AI-generated images, audio, text, or video, and Google already uses it to watermark images generated with its Imagen text-to-image model. The watermark is imperceptible to the human eye, doesn’t compromise the image quality, can’t be removed by scrubbing the metadata, and remains detectable even after modifications like cropping, adding filters, or changing colors.

Once the change goes live, customers will be able to see the SynthID watermark using the “About this image” feature in Search or Chrome. As you can see in the attached image, the feature will show whether a SynthID watermark is present and the image’s metadata.
