BioWare co-founder laments Jade Empire's commercial failure and blames it on 'the worst advice, absolutely moronic advice' from Microsoft - Related to bioware, advice,, new, forgotten, instead

Based on its new trailer, I predict A Minecraft Movie will make A Trillion Dollars

2023's Dungeons & Dragons movie made a lot of clever references to Dungeons & Dragons the game, like one character being told to hold important quest items because (as we eventually realize) he has a bag of holding, or the moment an NPC walks mindlessly off in a completely straight line once his quest was completed and. He had nothing further to do in the story.

A Minecraft Movie is going about things a bit differently. It's not making sly references to Minecraft. Instead, it's whipping out items from the game, holding them up to camera, and yelling their names at full volume. Take a look at the final trailer and count how many times that happens:

A Minecraft Movie | Final Trailer - YouTube Watch On.

I think it's a great strategy. Actually. This is a movie for little itty bitty Minecraft fans (some might call them children) so there's no point in being subtle. In the final trailer we see Jack Black use a water bucket to land safely from a fall, use flint and steel to ignite a nether portal. And give his companions elytra wingsuits to fly, which are all items directly ripped from the game. These items aren't just shown or nodded to, they're named. Loudly. Black literally shouts "Flint and steel!" while using flint and steel.

My prediction based on this trailer is that A Minecraft Movie will be the first film to make a trillion dollars. There are a lot of little kids who love Minecraft, and I bet those kids will like watching a movie filled with things they recognize from Minecraft, and they'll like yelling out the names of those things when they see those things, just like Jack Black does.

Like in the trailer, when a Chicken Jockey appears and. Jack Black yells "Chicken Jockey!" Kids will dig that, though I think Warner Bros could have saved a lot of budget by just having Jack Black stream himself playing Minecraft and yelling item names.

Children will also like seeing other stuff directly pulled from the game. It's not like the kid in the movie uses a forge and. Anvil to make a sword the way we've seen in so many fantasy movies. She uses a 6x6 grid to lay down one little stick and two little diamonds in a column, and. That makes a sword, just like in the game. The sword hasn't been adapted for a live-action film, either: it looks exactly like a pixelated diamond sword from the game.

That's why the movie is gonna be big. It's just like the game, and that should make Minecraft fans happy. A Minecraft Movie opens in theaters April 4.

BioWare co-founder laments Jade Empire's commercial failure and blames it on 'the worst advice, absolutely moronic advice' from Microsoft

BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk left the business with fellow founder Ray Muzyka in 2012. Four years after the pair had sold the storied RPG developer to Electronic Arts. It's fair to say that both are probably watching recent events with interest, after the lukewarm commercial reception to Dragon Age: The Veilguard saw the publisher react by slashing jobs at BioWare, leaving a smaller staff focused entirely on the next Mass Effect game.

Zeschuk has just appeared on the My Perfect Console podcast with Simon Parkin. During which he goes over much of Bioware's history (including his pipe dream of taking over EA "from the inside"). During the chat Zeschuk talks about the worst advice he ever received in the industry which, unfortunately, he acted upon: And it's all about Jade Empire.

Jade Empire is not among BioWare's best-known games, but some sickos will tell you its among the very finest the studio ever produced: Loosely based on Chinese mythology, it follows the adventures of the Spirit Monk on the way to becoming a martial arts master. With great melee combat, a sprawling cast and the moral choices the studio was known for. It was also BioWare's first original IP and, as Zeschuk has introduced previously, the "dream project" for himself and Muzyka.

Anyway, as good as it was, Jade Empire was not a big seller and. Would never get the sequel it deserved: Something that Zeschuk puts squarely on Microsoft, and specifically the advice it gave BioWare around the game's release. Necessary context: Jade Empire was released on the original Xbox hardware in April 2005 as an exclusive, and. It would take two more years to hit PC. Also, the Xbox 360 was released in November 2005.

"Microsoft was like 'no no, you should release it now. Right at the end of the [console] cycle, because it's a great time'," Zeschuk says. "It was the worst advice, absolutely moronic advice from them, the stupidest thing ever."

With the benefit of hindsight, Zeschuk thinks the best thing for the game would have been to delay it. And work on releasing it as an Xbox 360 title early in that console's life. "We could have rezzed [Jade Empire] up, we could have amped it up," says Zeschuk. "We could have stated no."

Zeschuk reckons that doing this would have given BioWare "another franchise" to sit alongside Dragon Age and Mass Effect. "I just think it would have been a way more successful product at the beginning of a cycle than the end."

Generally speaking, Zeschuk seems to straddle a line between being a hugely successful businessman. And having a healthy dislike of big companies. One wonders if he would still sell to EA, if he had his time again. "Big companies exist to exploit properties," says Zeschuk at another point. "They exist to exploit games. Most of the big North American guys, they’re just good at, 'Hey, let’s just squeeze the most money out of this franchise.' They don’t kind of create a lot of them, and. I kind of realised early on that I like making games. I don’t like just operating."

These days Zeschuk can be found focusing on his craft beer business. Talk about life goals. Jade Empire remains available on Steam, though sadly we'll never see the sequel, and Zeschuk's full interview can be found at My Perfect Console.

The latest entry in The Witcher books finally has an English release date, and. It'll follow Geralt on his first ever mission.

Diablo 4 patch change could make it easier to find Forgotten Altars, or you could pet Dorian the Raven instead

Diablo 4 patch change could make it easier to find Forgotten Altars, or you could pet Dorian the Raven instead

Things have been a little quiet in the realm of Diablo 4 of late. Blizzard continued releasing updates after the launch of Season of Witchcraft, but they mostly revolved around fixing bugs - some of which were introduced with the new season.

That changed this week, however, thanks to a new modification that actually made a couple of welcome tweaks. And even reversed a change that had been annoying a few players.

Patch arrived on Tuesday in Diablo 4. The bulk of the changes has to do with the new season. The big one is the addition of a new Nightmare Dungeon Affix that’s specifically designed to guarantee a Forgotten Altar will spawn in that dungeon.

From now until the end of the season, this Affix will be an option that could roll on Nightmare Dungeon Sigils, meaning it won’t be on every Sigil you find.

Forgotten Altars were introduced with Season of Witchcraft. And they’re required to unlock some of the rarer Witchcraft Powers. They can be found in any normal dungeon - and Blizzard even upped their spawn rate post-launch, but. Some players are still missing a few because the system is reliant on RNG.

Another neat addition in this week’s patch is the ability to pet Dorian the Raven. Dorian is another Season of Witchcraft newcomer, though you can only unlock it as part of the battle pass. It's a pet that helps you pick up materials and Gold.

Twilight Warding, a Witchcraft Power that Blizzard disabled because it caused damage to the player casting it, is back. Too.

In the previous major patch, Blizzard made one big change that affected a lot of Druid players. The developer simply made it so the player can’t move while casting Lacerate, which didn’t go down well. So it’s been reverted in .

Diablo 4 is currently hosting the latest edition of Mother’s Blessing. This is the most rewarding version of the event yet, as it includes gear, and not just XP/Gold. The event is live until Tuesday, February 25.
